Well suited by soft conditions and bolted up off a 6lb lower mark at Newmarket last year. Had a pipe opener at Southwell two weeks ago and should come on for that. Drops back to 6f here having been running over 7f.

Age: 8|  Weight: 10-1| J: Barry McHugh| T: Mrs R Carr| OR:  97| D
Generally consistent performer who has struggled to win off marks of 100+. Finally gets a bit a relief from the handicapper and is hard to discount depsite the five month break.

Al Qahwa157
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-0| J: D Tudhope| T: D O'Meara| OR:  96| D
Ran in some big field competitive handicaps last year running with plenty of credit on several occasions. Dropped 2lb and manages to sneak into a 0-95 here on the back of a 5 month break. Various forms of head gear left off today.

Boundsy156
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-7| J: P Hanagan| T: R A Fahey| OR:  89| D
Progressive in 2017 winning three times and running with plenty of credit on several other occasions. Every chance there will be more to come this year and the step back up to six furlongs looks a good move. Strong claims if ready to go.

Mobsta8
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-6| J: S De Sousa| T: M R Channon| OR:  88| BF| D
Well backed favourite for his return at Doncaster (6f, soft) last week when getting hampered at a crucial stage and staying on well. Conditions suit today and is very well handicapped on the best of his form and has a big chance.

Handsome Dudeb74
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-5| J: B A Curtis| T: T D Barron| OR:  87| D
Won nicely at Southwell (6f, AW) last time when beating the consitent Tricky Dicky (runs 3.50). Only 2lbs higher today but has been a bit in and out in the past so could be vunerable for win purposes today.

Rasheeq156
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-4| J: D Allan| T: T D Easterby| OR:  86| D
Only won once in 21 starts (weak Southwell maiden) but does have a liking for soft ground which brings him in to this. Beaten just a nose by Boundsy when they clashed at Haydock in September and a repeat of that would see him in the mix.

Slightly disappointing the last twice having won well the time before at Epsom (7f, good). This track may suit this prominent racer and easy to make a fairly solid case for his chances.

Russian Realm13
Age: 8|  Weight: 9-2| J: G Lee| T: P T Midgley| OR:  84| D
One time smart performer that is lurking on a dangeous mark. Has a liking for soft ground so positives can be taken from most recent efforts on the AW. Race fit and should be very hard to keep ouf of the frame.

Tawny Port320
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-1| J: F Norton| T: J G Given| OR:  83| D
Off the track for nearly a year after finishing down the field at York (7f, soft) in May. Was progressive prior to that but may well now be weighted to his best and very likely to need a run or two.

My Name Is Rio161
Age: 8|  Weight: 9-0| J: Connor Beasley| T: M Dods| OR:  82| D
Likes soft ground and has slipped back to his last wining mark of 82. Could enter calculations with conditions to suit today so couldn't dismiss.

Proud Archi153
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-11| J: Paula Muir(7)| T: M Dods| OR:  79
Hold up performer who needs things to drop right for him in his races. The drop back in trip here not sure to suit and his best efforts have come on a sound surface so questions to answer.

Rantan20
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-10| J: K Stott| T: P T Midgley| OR:  78| CD
Changed hands for £8,000 in September but disappointed at Southwell (5f, AW) on first start for new yard. Trainer does well with his sprinting recruits and the second run on the back of a wind operation is developing into an interesting angle.

Forecasts

Mobsta (9/2), Boundsy (5/1), Handsome Dude (6/1), Scofflaw (7/1), Love Dreams (8/1), Pipers Note (10/1), Russian Realm (10/1), Al Qahwa (12/1), Rasheeq (14/1), My Name Is Rio (14/1), Rantan (14/1), Tawny Port (20/1), Proud Archi (25/1)

Verdict

A devilishly competitive sprint handicap in which you can make a solid case for at least half of the field. Despite conditions this should be run at a good clip and it may fall into the hands of a hold up performer. Mobsta is likely to be very popular after his unlucky run at Doncaster. Cases can be made for both Boundsy and Rasheeq to go well. The selection though in terms of value has to be RUSSIAN REALM. He is very well handicapped on the best of his old form, conditions are ideal and should be very hard to keep out the frame. Rantan could run well at a big price.

  3. Rantan
