Age: 3|  Weight: 11-0| J: L P Aspell| T: O Sherwood
66/1
72-rated Flat performer who hasn't quite lived up to his name over hurdles so far, being pulled up first time and then beating just one home at Plumpton last month. Needs to make a marked improvement to figure.

Horse silk
25/1
Well held in all four Flat outings over 7f-1m½f when with William Muir. Now in good hands for his transition to this game, but no obvious jumping pedigree and has stamina to prove. Market check suggested, though probably one to watch.

High Wellsb17
Age: 3|  Weight: 11-0| J: C O'Farrell| T: S Durack| BF
9/2
Won a Flat handicap at Bath (1m3½f, good to firm) in August from a mark of 60, though was beaten 14L when sent off favourite on his hurdling debut at Plumpton last time. Should know more about it now and should be thereabouts.

Sole win was on the Flat over 1m (soft) approximately a year ago but has enough ability in that sphere to think that he can win races over jumps. Has put in a couple of reasonable efforts so far and if the blinkers work he should be on the premises.

Skilful Lordt56
Age: 3|  Weight: 11-0| J: T Scudamore| T: D Pipe
33/1
Very modest Flat handicapper who has yet to make the frame in that sphere. Switched to this stable prior to his August hurdles debut but was sent off at 33-1 and beaten 31L at Newton Abbot. Has a lot of improving to do.

Horse silk
33/1
Did reasonably well on the All Weather for David Simcock, but didn't show much for him on two turf outings after being gelded. Now with a new yard for this hurdling debut. Should be okay stamina-wise, though probably one to watch today.
7
Horse silk
4/7
Decent Flat performer (OR 93) who arrives here for his hurdling debut on the back of 1m2f wins at Sandown (good) and Newmarket (good) in quick succession last month. If he can jump then he should have too much pace for this field.

Yorkshire Starp41
Age: 3|  Weight: 11-0| J: H Cobden| T: W G M Turner| OR:  106
50/1
Moderate Flat performer at up to 1m2f who shaped as if he could do a bit better over hurdles when a 5L fourth at Stratford in July. Didn't quite live up to that at Newton Abbot next time, but with a bit of improvement he could pick up some money.
9
Horse silk
100/1
0-8 and has never really threatened to get involved on either turf or the All Weather on the level. Plenty of stamina in the pedigree, so getting home shouldn't be an issue on her hurdles debut, but she may find others doing so that bit quicker.
10
Horse silk
7/1
Beaten 26L and then 12½L in her two hurdles runs in Ireland, though they were probably tougher races than this and if she handles this quicker ground then you couldn't rule her out from picking up some prize money this time.

Forecasts

The Statesman (4/7), Phoenix Dawn (9/2), High Wells (9/2), Sonic Wind (7/1), Harbour Force (25/1), Temir Kazyk (33/1), Skilful Lord (33/1), Yorkshire Star (50/1), Born Legend (66/1), Penny Red (100/1)

Verdict

This does not look to have much depth to it and THE STATESMAN is taken to score on his debut over timber. Ian Williams' charge is in cracking form on the Flat and should be well schooled for this. If he can jump with any fluency then this looks there for the taking. High Wells can improve and should be able to take a hand in proceedings, while both Yorkshire Star and Irish raider Sonic Wind could take a step forward and get involved in the scrap for the minors. Keep an eye on the market too, especially with regard to Harbour Force.
  1. The Statesman
  2. High Wells
  3. Sonic Wind
