Had just the one run for Aidan O'Brien, way back in 2012, when beaten 7½L in a Gowran Park maiden (1m, heavy). There can't be many who wait over five years until their second run and with no idea what to expect this time around, a quick market check is suggested. Tongue tied.

Modest hurdler and little obvious signs of ability on the Flat judging by his recent efforts at Lingfield and Salisbury. More realistic prospects one handicapping at a lowly level.

There can't have been too many that have been waiting for this mare to make her return to action. She last raced in October 2014 and hasn't shown any form whatsoever in bumpers or on the Flat.

Makes her Flat debut at the age of nine having won six races in 41 attempts over jumps. She demonstrated her current well-being when winning a 3m handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter (good) in late July from a mark of 121, but surely a couple of the others will be too sharp for her today.

Filled the frame on all three starts in maidens, and without looking a rock-solid proposition has shown that he handles soft ground well enough as he's gradually stepped up in trip from 1m to 1m2f and most latterly to 1m4f.

160,000 gns yearling by Lope De Vega, but needs to significantly better his recent debut at Windsor (1m2f good to soft). He was soon detached in rear and failed to pass a single rival in finishing last of 16 to Al Mayda.

€140,000 yearling by Manduro. His debut effort can probably be ignored (stumbled and saddle slipped), and he shaped like there was better to come when never competitive at Doncaster (1m2f good) recently. This step up in trip should suit and likely to show much more this afternoon.

Verdict

As maidens go this most certainly isn't a strong heat, with a few of these runners having compelling stories to tell having been absent from the track for extended periods of time. ANCIENT LODGING is the sole filly in the line up, but her opening effort at Salisbury indicates that she probably has far more scope for improvement than the vast majority of her male rivals, so she rates as a confident selection over a new trip which should suit her perfectly.
  1. Ancient Longing
  2. War Brigade
  3. Hawridge Flyer
