Useful performer on synthetics on his day and has managed seven victories on varying surfaces including Tapeta, Polytrack and Fibresand. Seemingly not the same force on grass (0 from 3) and hasn't run on turf since May 2014. Off since March and likely to need this race.

7lb higher than when making a winning debut for this stable at Thirsk (1m4f good) in August 2016, and relatively lightly raced since. Off since early June when dropped to 1m2f on Tapeta at Newcastle and needs to prove she stays this trip with the market possibly the most informative guide.

A step up in trip, the fitting of cheek-pieces and moving up into handicaps have all clearly had a positive effect on this lightly raced three-year-old. He built upon an improved showing at Ayr in mid July when staying on well to see off Sheriff Garrett by 1½L at Thirsk last week (1m4f good to soft). Up again in trip and 7lb higher but strong claims.

Raced just once since May 2016 (hurdles), and that was on the AW at Newcastle in January. Not getting any younger and very difficult to fancy.

Jan De Heem13
Age: 7|  Weight: 9-9| J: Ben Robinson(5)| T: Miss T Jackson| OR:  60
12/1
A five time career winner, but not since September 2015, and only once beyond 1m2f (in a small field affair at Brighton in September 2013). His form over C&D, most notably when a runner up to Midnight Warrior in late July indicates that he just about stays the trip, but there does appear more obvious potential winners.

This trip appears to suit him perfectly and he's a three time C&D winner. He was raised 3lb for beating Jan De Heem by a neck here on his penultimate start last month and ran well enough on softer ground at Musselburgh latest, and the suspicion is that he'll have enough about him to confirm those placings today. C&D record since early 2016 reads; 1,3,2,5,1.

Finished down the field over C&D behind Miss Tree in late May (Midnight Warrior second), but bounced out just a week later to score by 2¼L over this trip in soft ground at Wetherby. Up 3lb and absent since and that represents his sole success in 19 starts. Unlikely to be suited by drying ground.

Age: 9|  Weight: 9-5| J: D Nolan| T: C R Dore| OR:  56
25/1
A regular winner over the years (12 from 91), but most of his success has come on artificial surfaces, and probably not the force of old having finished third in a Wolverhampton claimer in mid July. Not raced on turf since finishing fifth over C&D from a 9lb higher mark in November.

Switches back to turf after dabbling with Tapeta for the first time in his career lately, but has yet to win beyond 1m4f in 33 career starts (both victories at Hamilton). Falling in the weights, but that's unlikely to be enough.

Finished a short-head runner up to Dew Pond in this contest in 2015 having earlier won three races that year, including over C&D in June 2015. However, has gone off the boil since and raced poorly throughout 2016, and was last of eleven when last in action over C&D in September. A great chance at her best and handicapped to run a blinder if fully fit and adopting her usual make all tactics, but clearly comes with risks attached.

An 18 race maiden, but went close from a 2lb higher mark over C&D in June (good to firm). Not so good more latterly and the percentage call is that others will prove stronger.

Oliver's Gold19
Age: 9|  Weight: 8-11| J: Callum Rodriguez(5)| T: M Walford| OR:  48
5/1
A 27 race maiden on the Flat, but an eight time winner over obstacles (fences and hurdles) and in good order with cut at Cartmel over the past few months. Drying ground would be detrimental to his chances, but with a rating of just 48 (79 below his current chase mark of 127), he'll most likely take his chance.

Forecasts

Vindicator (1/1), Oliver's Gold (5/1), Midnight Warrior (8/1), Jan De Heem (12/1), Calliope (14/1), Adherence (14/1), Mister Bob (16/1), Stanarley Pic (18/1), Percy Verence (20/1), Yasir (25/1), Slipper Satin (40/1), Rock A Doodle Doo (66/1)

Verdict

Redcar is very much the manor of both Midnight Warrior and his trainer Ron Barr. The seven-year-old enjoys the seaside air and is always a force to be reckoned with over this C&D as he demonstrated when nudging out Jan De Heem last month. Slipper Satin is another who likes this track and this long time absent mare was a runner up in this contest in 2015 and is handicapped to run a big race if over whatever ailment has kept her off the track for fast approaching 12 months. However, with drying ground likely against Wetherby winner Adherence, the most obvious winner is the fast developing three-year-old VINDICATOR. He needs to show further stamina reserves over this extended trip, but he's beginning to shape like a horse that is quite a bit better than this kind of level.
  1. Vindicator
  2. Slipper Satin
  3. Midnight Warrior
