Placed over C&D in a strong handicap won by Suzi's Connoisseur in February, and solid since, gaining due reward for his consistency when a neck winner of a 7f handicap at Yarmouth last month. Up 1lb and a player despite top-weight.
A two time winner on turf, but placed on all three starts at this track, including when beaten a short-head by Barracuda Boy in this race in 2016. Rallying, but held near the finish by the progressive Unabated in a Class 2 handicap here on Plate Day earlier this month, and a major player over this longer trip despite a 3lb higher mark.
Produced a career best performance to take a 7f handicap at Chelmsford by ¾L from Mount Tahan in early May. Adores that Essex track, but also handles other synthetic surfaces well and finished 2L third to course specialist War Department (Florencio second) on his sole visit to this track earlier in the month.
In excellent order last term winning twice over this trip at Yarmouth (June) and Ascot (September). More low-key in three starts this term, but this is less competitive than the York handicap he contested latest and a player if back to his very best.
Solid if unspectacular in twice finishing a runner up over 6f at Hamilton this month. Fully capable from this mark at his best and this trip of 7f holds no fears for a six time career winner.
Back to back 7f Polytrack winner during the winter and has kept lofty company back on turf since May. Hampered in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot latest (and perhaps didn't stay), but respected under this excellent 5lb claimer now dropped in grade on synthetics.
Strong performer on the AW (better than on turf) and was 1½L second to War Department (Welliesinthewater third) over C&D last month. Races from the same mark, but this looks a fraction stronger and beaten from a more favourable turf mark at Beverley since.
Claimed after finishing 2L second to Michele Strogoff at Chester (7f+ good to soft) in late June and filled that same position on stable debut at Ayr when beaten by Be Kool last week. This is stronger and ideally suited by further, but no worries on the surface.
C&D winner whose form has tailed off slightly recently with a higher handicap weight, and although having done best for David Nolan and Paul Hanagan, his trainer turns to their 3lb claimer seeking to counteract some of that recent rise in the weights.
C&D winner (October 2016) and regularly in the frame at this track since, including when runner up over 1m to Excel Again last month. Up another 3lb, but unable to exploit a more favourable turf mark at Beverley most latterly.
A six time winner on turf but 0 from 19 on the AW. Picked up from Brian Ellison for £5,000 in May, and back to form winning for this trainer at Ayr in June (6f). This is much stiffer test, now switched back to Tapeta; a surface that his trainer has laid at his home base in Langholm. Wears first time cheek-pieces.
Along with Horroob, one of just a pair of three-year-old's in this prestigious contest. However, hasn't fulfilled his potential since winning a maiden in a pleasing manner at Ayr in July 2016, and whilst dropped a few pounds in the weights is tricky to fancy on AW debut.

Horroob (7/4), Gothic Empire (5/1), Northgate Lad (6/1), Horsted Keynes (7/1), Town Charter (12/1), Amood (14/1), Strong Steps (14/1), Inaam (16/1), Florencio (22/1), Harwoods Volante (25/1), Canny Kool (25/1), Gilmer (33/1), Welliesinthewater (33/1)
The 2017 renewal of the Beeswing Handicap sees HORROOB arrive as a fairly progressive three-year-old for Roger Varian. He has kept lofty company on turf since recording back to back 7f victories on Polytrack, and there's every likelihood that we've not seen the best of this lightly raced sort just yet. This is a better option than the Britannia Handicap and he has the services of an excellent 5lb claimer booked to do the steering. 2016 runner up Northgate Lad (also drawn low) would represent a solid alternative, and the top-weighted Horsted Keynes is likely to be on the premises judged upon his previous third to Suzi's Connoisseur over C&D in February.
- Horroob
- Horsted Keynes
