C&D winner who broke a fairly long losing spell last year when scoring back-to-back wins on the Tapeta at Newcastle over the minimum trip taking advantage of tumbling mark to score off 74 and 80 (previous win came off 84). All of that form was for her former yard (David O'Meara) and she's been highly tried in her two starts for current connections both runs being in Listed grade. Showed plenty over 6f on the first of them and backed that here over 5f recently with a second to Spring Fling although her mark has suffered as a result.

Seems to have been around forever and run well and won here over 6f in the past with some very useful form to his name especially with give in the ground (the softer the better). Has been a regular fixture in the Ayr Gold Cup (third his best effort in the race) and now being given a chance by the handicapper and starting to very much look on the way back on the evidence of his last two starts particularly at Newcastle last time out when he was fourth to Line Of Reason.

The 2015 winner of this contest off a 2lb higher mark his trainer is in good form at the moment as he comes here looking for a repeat win in the race in which he produced a career best effort. A winner twice since then over 5f with give in the ground he gave notice that he was coming back to form prior to winning again over C&D on his penultimate start. Wasn't in quite the same form last time on quicker ground and back up in the weights with El Hombre finishing second in that race.

Trainer won this last year with one who runs earlier on the card and he has a nice 1-2 punch in this race this time around. This one was in particularly good form last year when winning four times all over this trip with the last win coming off a mark of 81 (started winning run off 59). Ran below par last time out but her two runs prior to that showed plenty of promise off this mark although her tendency to start slowly is a worry and can and has hampered her chance.

Almost a year to the day since he last won and now on a run of 14 consecutive defeats although he does take a slight drop in grade here from his last two starts. His mark looks a fair one (only 2lb above his last winning one) but he starting to look a hard one to catch right these days and others have to be preferred here.

You have to go back to his two-year-old days to find some winning form (thought good enough to run at Group level) and in fact took that year's Newbury Super Sprint. Certainly has never really lived up to that form since and tried in a visor on his last three starts to pep him up but he disappointed again at Redcar last time. Now off a career low mark (82) and tried in a hood for the first time.

A credit to the yard this season with three consecutive victories to his name all over 5f at Musselburgh (twice) and here on his penultimate start completing the hat-trick off a career high mark of 80. This is another step up in grade after he was third at Musselburgh last time in a 0-85 where he ran well but met one at the top of his game (Longroom). All of his winning form had come on top of the ground so any rain would be a worry.

C&D winner last year off a 3lb higher mark he had slipped a fair bit in the weights when winning at Wolverhampton in April off a mark of 73 well suited by a good pace at the trip there. All three runs since have come on turf and all have been creditable without suggesting that he would be winning something like this.

Trainer took this race in 2014 with Mutafaakir and for the most part has had her horses in good form this year. Started this season a workable mark which he cashed in on at Ripon in April over 5f dead-heating with Black Grass and most of his subsequent runs have been consistent although he was below-par last time with the softer conditions appearing to catch him out.

Verdict

Tight would be the best adjective to describe this handicap where it’s fairly hard to rule out any of the runners. My Name Is Rio is a previous winner and Keith Dalgleish knows how to win this having taken it last year and he runs his progressive three-year-old El Hombre along with Showdaisy who will be very dangerous if she gets way on terms for once. Rural Celebration looks to have improved with her runs in Listed class looking good in the context of this but it has bumped her up the handicap a fair bit. In the end JACK DEXTER who has been given a chance by the handicapper is the suggestion here on his old form he would carry this lot home but still has enough zip to make a bold show here.
  1. Jack Dexter
  2. El Hombre
  3. Rural Celebration
