Never figured over slightly shorter in a big-field handicap at this course in April, but was slowly away and probably drawn inconveniently given how the race panned out. Place possibilities now returning to a smaller field in a first time hood.
Makes his first appearance at a British racecourse since 2015 having spent the time since being trained in Dubai, with relatively little success (1/12 and unplaced in all other starts). Has to show more here after a moderate lay-off.
Picked up a third career win in a Pontefract handicap last month and is up 4lb as a result. That increase could prove to be lenient given the style in which he won, and he retains the partnership with a jockey who knows him well on ground that should suit.
Comeback run at Yarmouth last month was far too bad to be true, and he should have the ability to be competitive in this if returning to the level of form she showed last year, with improvement still a possibility given her age and profile.
Seemed to find his handicap ceiling with two back-to-back wins last year and remains some way above his most recent winning mark. Didn't do badly last time out though, when shaping as if this step down in trip would help.
Has run fair races in better handicaps to this but up until now hasn't been able to add to a maiden win at Ripon last year (7f, good). Shaped well at Newmarket when unlucky in-running on ground that may have been softer than ideal, and is very interesting off the same mark here.
No win since moving to his current trainer but has shown glimpses of promise, especially when tried over this trip. Not one to rely on but also not incapable of winning a handicap of this nature.
Eased in class slightly but hasn't seemed the same horse since being gelded early last year, and showed no improvement for a new trainer at Newcastle last time.
Forecasts
Mon Beau Visage (2/1), Sovereign Bounty (7/2), Intensical (9/2), Midnight Macchiato (5/1), Blind Faith (7/1), Groor (20/1), Dutch Art Dealer (20/1), Jacob Black (66/1)
Most of these have claims of one form or another here, but on balance it could be MIDNIGHT MACCHIATO who ultimately comes out on top. He has run well in some better races than this and has been more than a little bit unlucky on several occasions. Nothing went right for him at Newmarket last time and he still managed to finish a respectable third (having been sent off favourite), and going off the same mark here looks more than capable of making amends back on a sounder surface. Mon Beau Visage looks well treated off the back of a win at Pontefract last month, while Intensical is a little inconsistent but could easily fight for a place.
- Midnight Macchiato
- Mon Beau Visage
- Intensical
