Very difficult to be enthusiastic about what he achieved in three starts in maidens in 2016 and returns from ten months off the track for his handicap debut rated 62.

Not the most reliable but has shown signs of ability over 7F and 1m at Musselburgh and Ayr last month, twice finishing a runner up off 2lb lower marks. Not so good at Ayr latest, but should be fine at this trip judged upon an AW success for Gay Kelleway in February 2016.

Only beaten a head by Raashdy over the extended mile at Wolverhampton in December, but less promise since and remains a maiden after seven attempts. Turf (Flat) debut.

Won a Redcar claimer and a Thirsk seller over 1m in August 2016, but no promise since switched back to handicapping this term and needs to show more for a slight drop in the weights. Handles cut.

16 race maiden, but has hit the post on a couple of occasions over 7F. Ran well enough when fourth at Newcastle latest, but that form probably isn't very strong, and possibly stamina is a concern now upped to 9F. Wears first time cheek-pieces.

Rounded off 2016 in decent shape winning over 1m at Newcastle in December beating the solid Tapeta yardstick Lozah by a neck. Fairly consistent thereafter, but not able to exploit a much lower turf mark more latterly. Dropped again in the weights and softer ground could suit.

Solid performer once upon a time for Sir Michael Stoute, with his best form all coming with considerable ease in the ground. Fairly reliable late 2016 for this trainer from marks in the 50's (Irish), but out of form lately. Could be feared from a mark of just 48 on soft ground if the market support arrives.

Age: 6|  Weight: 8-8| J: J P Sullivan| T: B Rothwell| OR:  47
33/1
26 race maiden and no showing in a couple of attempts over hurdles in January. Did finish second on soft ground to Scruffy Mcguffy in a seller in August 2016, but hardly one to be wildly enthusiastic about given her overall career profile.

Highfield Lassp192
Age: 6|  Weight: 8-7| J: A Mullen| T: M Dods| OR:  46
4/1
15 race maiden, but a couple of placed efforts over 1m2f from similar marks in the latter half of 2016 means she's no absolute back number. That said, off since November 2016, she'd be well within her rights to need this comeback run.

Never Sayp28
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-7| J: F Norton| T: J Ward| OR:  45
25/1
18 race maiden who was well beaten in Ripon seller on her seasonal return (turf) last month and is very tough to fancy.

Forecasts

Beverley Bullet (7/2), New Abbey Angel (7/2), Highfield Lass (4/1), Old China (9/2), Leonard Thomas (9/1), Scruffy Mcguffy (12/1), Modern Tutor (16/1), Never Say (25/1), May Mist (25/1), Bertha Burnett (33/1)

Verdict

Division 1 of a rather dire looking 1m1f Handicap in which making a strong argument for any of the ten runners is nigh impossible. New Abbey Angel arguably arrives in the best form, but doesn't look like the kind of horse you'd want to be taking a short price about, so it's far better to look elsewhere for some value. Leonard Thomas could provide that if able to translate his AW form to turf from a basement mark with Jamie Gormley taking off another handy 7lb, but the vote goes to Irish raider MODERN TUTOR who was a cut above these rivals once upon a time and relishes testing conditions.
  1. Modern Tutor
  2. Leonard Thomas
  3. New Abbey Angel
