Won a couple of Newcastle novices' events last year over the minimum trip and then scored over 6f at Chelmsford, though 0-10 on turf so far. Had excuses when beaten at Catterick last time and had been shaping reasonably well in better races than this before going there, so should be competitive.
Landed a Navan maiden (5f, good) in August but made too much of an impression on the handicapper. Had first start for this trainer at Chester last month when 33-1 and a 3L sixth of 10 (6f, good) in a stronger contest. 2lb drop will help and should be more closely involved.
Won two of her first three starts, both over this trip and on good to firm/soft ground. Finished last season in Group Three company at Newmarket, though as a well beaten 66-1 chance. Switched to this yard for her reappearance when last of 11, beaten 15L over C&D last month. Should be better for both that and 3lb drop. Interesting.
Won a York novices' event (5f, good) on debut last year and was runner-up, albeit beaten 3¾L, in the Listed Harry Roseberry Stakes at Ayr (5f, good to soft) in September. Form then tailed off and resumed in similar fashion with a 34L defeat when last of 12 in a class three at York (5f, soft) last month. Hood applied here and not one to write off yet.
Began the campaign well when scoring over C&D (good to firm) in April. Runner-up has come out and won since to bolster the form and this gelding was beaten just 1¼L when stepped up in class at Hamilton (6f, good to firm) last time. Same mark again today and should be very competitive.
Won Kempton maiden (6f, AW) in September for Luca Cumani, but well held from a mark of 80 in his first handicap start for that yard and then for current stable on his reappearance at Lingfield in April. Hood applied here and handicapper has dropped him 3lb, but has a bit to prove.
Won a Sandown maiden (5f, good to firm) for Andrew Balding last season but then unable to handle marks of 79 and 78. Since switched to this yard, for whom she makes her debut today from 3lb lower and in a weaker contest. Not ruled out.
Has 1¼L to find with Dandy Highwayman on their running here in April (and went on to win at Pontefract next time) but is now 5lb worse off and was well beaten in this grade at Haydock last time. That may have been too bad to be true, but he still comes here with a bit to prove now.
Forecasts
Dandy Highwayman (3/1), Poet's Society (7/2), Suitcase 'n' Taxi (4/1), Glorious Rocket (6/1), Impart (7/1), Night Law (10/1), Angel Meadow (14/1), Groupie (25/1)
Poet's Society is interesting in this grade and he looks capable of going close to a first turf win, while Angel Meadow showed that she has ability in Listed company last season and is respected. Dandy Highwayman looks booked for another good run, while Night Law and Impart are not ruled out. However, GROUPIE was thought good enough to try in a Group Three last season and although not up to it, she drops into the sort of grade in which she can make a real impact, so she is given the vote.
- Groupie
- Dandy Highwayman
- Poet's Society
