Disappointing he hasn't got off the mark yet but the combination of a return to softer ground and a further step up in trip may do the trick. Should do better this time.

Didn't show much on debut at Wolverhampton and still looked green but overcame his immaturity last time at Yarmouth to win a three-runner race. Handicap mark seems a little high on what he's achieved to date and soft ground not sure to be ideal.

Improved to finish runner-up at Nottingham on third start and performed well here on his debut. Useful claimer booked and interesting to see how he goes on slower ground but handicapper hasn't taken any risks.

Beaten at odds on last time in soft ground at Redcar towards the end of last season. His third behind Eminent prior to that was a nice piece of form and he could prove a different proposition this year, particularly if the first-time cheekpieces have a positive effect. Holds Derby and Royal Ascot entries so clearly expected to excel over this trip.

Could be a different proposition this time around after three disappointing runs last year. His effort on comeback run at Nottingham was full of promise after allowing the winner to get first run and he may come on for that. Would appear to be on a fair mark.

Form of his maiden runner-up effort hasn't really been franked by anything that finished behind him and he was well beaten on two subsequent starts last season. Easy winner at Southwell last time but may have relished that surface and he's not certain to be quite as effective, up 9lb on turf.

Disappointing in four efforts to date and not beaten many home. Comeback run wasn't devoid of promise but others hold more pressing claims and starting to run out of excuses.

Upped in trip and switched to handicaps worked the oracle on latest start at Wolverhampton when well backed. 7lb rise perhaps on the lenient side for that effort and may come on for the run so should give a good account provided he copes with the ground conditions.

Improved on all known form to land a Thirsk handicap on final start of 2016 in soft ground. 9lb rise for that not unfair as the front two pulled clear but it's a concern that the yard have been so quiet and trainer's runners often need their first run after a break.

His best efforts have come on the AW and he was a disappointing favourite when returned to turf at Goodwood earlier in the month. Something to prove now.

Fair effort on debut but very disappointing in three starts since and may need more relief from the handicapper.

Forecasts

Alqamar (14/5), Brimham Rocks (10/3), Swiftsure (6/1), Bedouin (9/1), Investigation (10/1), Taxmeifyoucan (10/1), Lester Kris (16/1), Dominating (16/1), Lord Commander (16/1), Nordic Combined (20/1), Sue's Angel (25/1)

Verdict

ALQAMAR ought to be winning this if he is to justfiy his entries in the Derby and the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot. The step up in trip should be in his favour and first-time cheekpieces could see him in a better light. It's very likely that Swiftsure is better than what he has shown so far and he could be a different proposition this year. Brimham Rocks has only been put up 7lb for a recent win and should give a good account provided he doesn't mind the slower surface.
