The majority of his wins have come over 6f but slow starts have handicapped his recent efforts and has found Listed company too much. His last turf win did come around this course (sole win over 7f) but has generally shown his best form on the AW.

Improved out of all recognition last year winning five consecutive handicaps the last off a mark of 97 and started well fancied (6/1 chance) for the Stewards Cup at Goodwood over 6f when well-in under a penalty. Form tailed off after that with two disappointing runs and it may well have been a case of a run too far. Shaped as if needing the run for his new yard (previous handler has retired) over 6f at Ripon and still looks as though he could improve this season.

Winner over C&D in Listed company in 2014 he won a Group 3 in the following year although he's not won since but has been highly tried with all his runs bar one in Group or Listed company. Ran a relatively solid race on his seasonal return in a Group 3 (may well have needed the run) and may well appreciate the ease in grade here.

His wide margin win in sprint terms at York in 2015 pushed his handicap mark up to a level that always looked as though it would make life tough. Tried in Listed/Group class after that he's looked a little out of his pay grade and with his stable yet to fire this year he faces a tough task here.

Not getting any younger but as his last win at Doncaster in November 2015 suggested he's better on a softer surface these days and may find conditions a little fast here. Highly tried on his last start of 2016 in a Group 1 he'll find this easier but does have a little to find at the weights with this field.

His C&D win came in a handicap off a mark of 81 some time ago but he's progressed since then and ran some creditable races in Listed company over this trip on the Lingfield AW. Returned to that venue after a break last time he showed that he remains in form although being unable to dominate he just struggled to show his very best.

Makes his debut for a new yard have previously been with Marco Botti and although on occasions he has looked like a smart performer he's never convinced under pressure and can look temperamental. Didn't look to be himself in Meydan in three runs out there and ran poorly over 7f on the AW at Wolverhampton last time out.

Thrived in 2015 and although he was well beaten over C&D on his final start of that year that defeat did come in Group 1 company. He'd previously won a Sandown Group 3 following up a win in a Listed race over the same C&D and although he failed to win last year he still showed some consistent form right up to the highest class. This is an easier contest and he can go well fresh and looks to be amongst the leading contenders here.

Forecasts

Waady (2/1), Aeolus (4/1), Mythmaker (9/2), Orion's Bow (13/2), Mobsta (8/1), Naadirr (10/1), Jack Dexter (10/1), George Dryden (14/1), Amazour (25/1)

Verdict

The class act in the field is Waadybut there is a slight suspicion that he may well be better over 5f than the 6f he faces here and he faces some solid performers in this. Mobsta is likely to need softer going while Naadirr may benefit from the change of scenery although he does have two ways of running. Aeolus looks likely to appreciate the ease in grade but a chance is taken here with ORION’S BOW who improved out of all recognition last year and after his reappearance could just have some more progression left in him.
  1. Orion's Bow
  2. Waady
  3. Aeolus
