Looked like there would be plenty more to come when he lost his maiden tag at Carlisle towards the start of last season but in too deep in a couple of subsequent starts in Group 2 company. Finished the season well-beaten in a Redcar Listed contest and this mark likely to be beyond him on handicap debut.

Won his York maiden against some useful types and only narrowly denied at Haydock in his follow up bid. Struggled upped in class on final two starts last year and drop back in trip looks unlikely to be the answer so looks best watched on return.

Won an above average Kempton maiden and not beaten far in follow up bid at Doncaster in a Listed contest. Trainer has started the season with a bang and the jockey booking is eye-catching so he looks like one of the more likely winners with more improvement very much on the cards and a feasible mark to work with.

Well-backed and obliged on debut on the AW at Newcastle but struggled in a fillies' Listed contest on only subsequent start when she refused to settle in the early stages. Still shaped with some promise and only beaten by some classy looking sorts so she could be on a lenient mark, particularly with more improvement sure to come.

Made an exciting start to his career getting the better of 12 rivals at Salisbury on debut. Shaped like there would be more to come on that occasion and quickened well but too green to do himself justice at Doncaster last time. Holds a 2,000 Guineas entry and may resume progress here if he's ready to go after 7 months off the track.

C&D winner of a weak looking maiden on second start after a good effort at Goodwood on debut. Form of those efforts doesn't look like the strongest on offer here and could be vulnerable from a handicapping perspective bearing in mind he struggled at York when he couldn't dominate from the front.

Good second behind a rival who's gone on to better things at Doncaster on second start but well beaten here at the end of last season. Best efforts have come when she can dominate from the front with a little more cut in the ground so looks opposable this time around with some pace on and faster conditions expected.

Victory Angel166
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-3| J: S De Sousa| T: R Varian| OR:  81
11/4
Finished third in a hot looking maiden at Doncaster on second start that produced numerous subsequent winners and prevailed when returned to that track at the end of the season on fast ground in another hot looking maiden (second won a maiden next time out and the fourth won a maiden and is now rated 89). A rating of 81 likely to underestimate him and he could well turn out to be a blot on the handicap.

Forecasts

Victory Angel (11/4), Castleacre (6/1), Rich And Famous (13/2), Akhlaaq (13/2), Hilario (7/1), Tommy Taylor (8/1), Medici Banchiere (8/1), Storm Cry (10/1), Orewa (12/1)

Verdict

VICTORY ANGEL looks like he could be at least one step ahead of the handicapper on his seasonal return after competing in some hot maidens last year. Castleacre is another who could be ahead of her mark, she pulled too hard at Newbury last time but looked useful on debut at Newcastle. Hilario gets the services of Ryan Moore and he went well in a Listed contest last time; he should go well for a trainer in good form.

  3. Hilario
