Useful as a two-year-old; contested the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot (15 of 22), and was a half length runner up in a 6F Doncaster Listed contest in October 2016. Got the better of Sutter County over this trip at Lingfield last month (form solid), and obvious chance if handling this stiffer track from a challenging draw.

6F Redcar Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy winner as a juvenile, and bounced back from a moderate return at Southwell when absolutely bolting up in a weaker race over this C&D (Hemingway second, Zamjar third) just under two weeks ago. Up 10lb, but such was the manner of that success (made all) that's probably a reasonable rise.

Kept strong company following his 6F debut success at Newmarket in June 2016, racing in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes (York), the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes (Kempton) and the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes (Newbury) thereafter. Makes his handicap debut rated 94, and interesting to see how he's trained on.

Finished tenth of 22 in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, but it wasn't until his fifth career start that he got off the mark (at Hamilton in July). That 6F success was quickly followed by another in a small field affair at Chester later that month, before rounding off the season (hampered) in a valuable sales race at Doncaster in September. Plenty to do in this company on his return, and now gelded.

Successful from today's mark at this track (7F) early in 2017, but that race lacked the depth of this contest. Well held in three subsequent races on the AW and drops back to 6F (handles the shorter trip) but with something to prove for now.

Stablemate of Wick Powell who duly converted a decent opportunity (2/9f) in a C&D maiden in January. His previous course form (runner up to Six Strings) has been franked, but more is required from this lightly raced sort on his handicap debut (rated 85).

7/1
3L C&D winner for this rider in late December 2016 who races from a 4lb higher mark for that success. Subsequently held in fifth in the Chelmsford void race fiasco, and no match for Wick Powell (4¼L third) last time over this C&D. Not certain to reverse placings with that rival despite 10lb better terms such was the authority of the winner.

Hemingway12
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-2| J: Joe Doyle| T: K A Ryan| OR:  80
3/1
Narrow 5F Pontefract maiden winner in July 2016 who rounded off a three race juvenile campaign by finishing midfield in a Class 2 6F contest at York's Ebor festival. Returned from a six month break, but was put firmly in his place by the race-fit Wick Powell over this C&D recently (3¾L runner up), and renews rivalry capable of improvement on 10lb better terms.

Forecasts

Wick Powell (15/8), Hemingway (3/1), Glorious Politics (7/1), Zamjar (7/1), Tomily (9/1), Leontes (11/1), Unabated (12/1), Letmestopyouthere (20/1)

Verdict

WICK POWELL bounced right back to his best in no uncertain terms over this C&D earlier this month, and such was the manner of his all the way success, a 10lb rise was merited. He should again see off Hemingway and Zamjar, with one of the other less exposed runners possibly a chief threat. David Barron will know how Glorious Politics stands with Wick Powell (stablemates), so any market move for this C&D maiden winner should be noted, whilst this is far easier than the races Unabated tackled last back-end, and on balance, he's probably a slight unknown in terms of his true level of ability, so it would be no surprise to see him go well on his seasonal bow.
  1. Wick Powell
  2. Unabated
  3. Hemingway
