Nine wins from 34 AW starts and has won here but finished third of seven on last start at his beloved Southwell (seven-time winner there) and never won over quite this far so looks opposable.

Below last winning mark but has been in poor form having not recorded a placed effort in last 13 starts. Flattered by losing margin two starts back and looked unenthusiastic last time out so hard to fancy.

Recorded back-to-back wins in March but handicapper appears to have caught up with him. Winning jockey from those wins returns and he can often squeeze out a bit of improvement. Dangerous if he's allowed to dictate matters from the front but that seems unlikely.

A five time AW winner in good form of late, out-battling High Command at Wolverhampton in December, and beaten narrowly over 2m at Kempton last time. This mark requires more but not ruled for connections in flying form.

Won a maiden at Lingfield in good fashion in May but opening mark looks stiff and finished last of seven on handicap debut. Still very much unexposed and stable do well with their stayers but may need this run after an absence.

Ride The Lightning23
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-7| J: L Morris| T: A Watson| OR:  82

Consistent sort in the form of his life currently with three wins and two runner-up efforts in last five starts. Extra two furlongs unlikely to be an issue and only up 1lb for his win last time out at Wolverhampton so holds leading claims in this field.

Small, and was beginning to look exposed before scoring in a relatively moderate maiden at Newcastle. Gelded and blinkered for the first time on that occasion. Struggled back in a handicap last time and looks like he needs some relief from the assessor.

Age: 7|  Weight: 8-12| J: K Stott| T: P A Kirby| OR:  68
12/1
A three time AW winner, one of those coming here but handicapper appears to have caught up with him. Doesn't often run a bad race so can't be completely ruled out.

Forecasts

Ride The Lightning (7/2), Paris Magic (7/2), Midtech Star (4/1), Tetradrachm (5/1), El Campeon (5/1), Luv U Whatever (12/1), Cavalieri (12/1), The Twisler (16/1)

Verdict

El Campeon has proved effective on the AW and should give another good account but there's a suspicion the handicapper may be starting to get a hold of him so RIDE THE LIGHTNING is narrowly preferred having only gone up 1lb for his most recent win. He seems to be thriving of late and it would be no surprise if this four-year-old has a bit more improvement in him. David Simcock does well with his stayers and Tetradrachm may be capable of running a place provided he's ready to go after a break. 1. Ride The Lightning 2. El Campeon 3. Tetradrachm
