Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival Guide: Tips, videos, dress code, Sky Bet odds and schedule to the York races

Everything you need ahead of the Ebor Festival at York

Our in-depth guide has everything you need ahead of the Ebor Festival at York, including race times, odds, tips and video previews.

What is the Ebor Festival?

The York Racecourse website bills Ebor week as 'sporting excellence combined with fashion and fun over four fabulous days' and it's hard to disagree with the strap-line for what is now one of the most significant weeks of the summer programme.

The Juddmonte International Stakes on the opening Wednesday afternoon - won by what is widely regarded as the world's greatest thoroughbred Frankel in 2012 - is the standout Group One race of the week and one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe.

The Darley Yorkshire Oaks and the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes are the highlights on Thursday and Friday respectively, but the race that gives the Festival its name has grown in stature in recent seasons and the whole week now builds towards the Sky Bet Ebor itself on Saturday.

The mile and three-quarter handicap is one of the most competitive races of the year and in 2019 will be worth a total prize fund of £1million for the first time.

Since 1840, York's oldest and most famous race has generated much excitement and many tales down the years and promises to be a thrilling spectacle once again this time.

When is the Ebor Festival?

The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival 2019 runs for four days from Wednesday August 21 to Saturday August 24.

It is the final major Flat meeting of the British summer schedule, following on from Royal Ascot in June and the Qatar Goodwood Festival at the end of July.

Who are the star names in action at the Ebor Festival?

Champion Irish jumps trainer Willie Mullins will throw as many darts at the Sky Bet Ebor as he can and True Self, Max Dyamite and Thomas Hobson rate a fascinating trio for the Closutton maestro.

But even in the absence of First Eleven, Britain's leading handler John Gosden arguably holds the strongest hand of all with Royal Line, last year’s runner-up Weekender and Ben Vrackie all looking live contenders for the Ebor.

Gosden is bringing Enable to the meeting for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks and could ensure it’s no lap of honour for the middle-distance superstar by pitching stablemate and Investec Oaks heroine Anapurna in against her.

King Of Comedy is the Gosden representative in the Juddmonte International and the rising star faces an acid test in against Crystal Ocean, who made Enable pull out all the stops in a QIPCO King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes of the ages at Ascot.

Then there’s Cheval Grand, a Japan Cup winner who failed to fire with juice underfoot at Ascot. He could be a different proposition at York and Deirdre has offered a timely reminder that a star performer in the Far East is perfectly capable of shaking up the best we have to offer.

Aidan O’Brien has yet to confirm the final Ballydoyle line-up for the ten furlong showpiece but St James’s Palace Stakes winner and Qatar Susex Stakes runner-up Circus Maximus plus QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Magna Grecia are both thought to be in the frame.

He often runs his leading William Hill St Leger candidate in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and it would be interesting to see Broome roll up here – and fascinating should Sir Dragonet get the green light.

Ten Sovereigns is out to prove he has the speed for five furlongs in the Coolmore Nunthorpe – a race in which Battaash has a question of his own to answer.
