Rocket crashes out

Alexander Ursenbacher pulled off the biggest shock of the week when beating Ronnie O'Sullivan 4-2 at the Welsh Open in Cardiff.

Life has been tough for Ursenbacher since he reached the semi-finals of the English Open a couple of years ago and he is danger of falling off the main tour if his results don't improve dramatically.

That shouldn't be an issue judging by this high-class performance which saw him dictate terms against an opponent who was shut out for long periods of the match despite an ideal start.

Following his wonderful display to beat the highly-touted Yuan Sijun on Wednesday, O'Sullivan raced into a 1-0 lead with a fabulous clearance of 118 and it appeared then as though he was on a fast track to the next round.

Ursenbacher responded with a calmly-taken 70 in frame two and should have won the next frame when well-set on 52 before O'Sullivan picked his pocket with a counter-clearance of 63 to inch back in front at 2-1.

Ursenbacher wasn't perturbed, though, dominating frame four before taking control of the match with a break of 57 in frame five.

The youngster was in first again in frame six and although needing a couple of bites of the cherry, he produced a fabulous pot on the yellow with the rest after O'Sullivan had missed from mid-range before rolling in the final pink to seal a memorable victory.

Selby sees off maximum man

Less than 48 hours on from snooker’s 148th maximum break, Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham bagged the 149th – only to lose 4-1 to Selby.

The Thai player exuded control of the cue-ball as he eased his way to a marvellous 147, but Selby was unmoved and continued his return to form with an ultimately convincing win to earn a last-16 clash with Hossein Vafaei.

Neil Robertson was the man who registered Tuesday’s maximum and he too remains on course - just - following comeback victory over Paul S Davison, who led 3-1 before the Aussie fought back to win 4-3.

Robertson progresses to face Michael Georgiou, who beat the better-fancied Barry Hawkins 4-2.

Jack the lad into last 16

Jack Lisowski showed glimpses of his undoubted talent to beat Sam Craigie 4-3 and reach the fourth round.

The Cheltenham youngster started the match with breaks of 127 and 101 but Craigie, who had registered just nine points in reply, clawed his way back to 2-2.

Lisowski took control again with a break of 82 but when missing match ball in the following frame, he allowed Craigie to level the scores at 3-3 with a nerveless clearance of 63.

It was Lisowski who prevailed, though, a 54 break helping him dominate the deciding frame and progress to the last 16 where he’ll meet five-time Welsh Open winner John Higgins, who again looked short of his best but still had enough in hand of Craig Steadman in a 4-2 success.

Ding delights after early wake-up call

Ding Junhui came from 2-0 down to beat Joe Perry 4-2 with an impressive display of break building.

Ding had only potted one ball by the time Perry raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to breaks of 84 and 127 but the match was turned on its head when Perry missed frame ball - the final black - when set to extend his lead to 3-0.

Ding just about held his nerve to pot to middle, the black catching the far jaw before consenting to drop, and it was one-way traffic thereafter.

A break of 71 allowed Ding to level the scores and he quickly took the ascendancy in frame five with a well-taken run of 52 putting him in front for the first time in the match.

Ding couldn't finish with a deserved century but another sizeable contribution, this time 98, took him over the line and left Perry pondering that missed black in frame three.

Jones crashes back down to earth

Duane Jones could not repeat the heroics of Wednesday as he was whitewashed by Robbie Williams.

Jones reached his first ever ranking semi-final in Germany earlier this month and continued his excellent start to the year by knocking out Judd Trump to reach the last 32 on home soil.

However, perhaps those exertions took their toll as Williams took a tight opener, went 2-0 in front with a break of 73, again edged the third and then fired in a century to wrap up a swift 4-0 success.

Maflin and Xintong power through

Norway's Kurf Maflin was also a 4-0 winner, Mike Dunn his victim, and he'll face Elliot Slessor for a quarter-final place after the 24-year-old beat Zhang Anda 4-2.

Zhau Xintong produced bookend centuries to beat Jimmy Robertson 4-2, breaks of 135 and 129 enough to earn him an unexpected meeting with Ursenbacher.

Ian Burns produced another upset in a tournament packed with them, beating Mark Allen 4-2, and his reward is a clash with Scott Donaldson - himself a 4-0 winner against James Cahill.
