Welsh Open: Ronnie O'Sullivan beats Yuan Sijun 4-2; Judd Trump loses

A focused Ronnie O'Sullivan progressed to the third round of the Welsh Open with a hard-fought 4-2 defeat of Chinese youngster Yuan Sijun in Cardiff.

O'Sullivan was anything but focused when beating Sanderson Lam on Tuesday but his respect for the highly-rated Sijun was immediately apparent as they pair locked horns in a tight opening frame.

A wonderful long pink ensured Sijun edged that one but O'Sullivan was keen to keep tabs on the Chinese youngster and levelled the scores with a brilliant break of 120.

More sublime snooker followed as O'Sullivan reeled off breaks of 66 and 90 to lead 3-1 but Sijun stuck to his task manfully and won the fifth frame thanks a handy fluke when well-set in the balls.

O'Sullivan ensured there would be no fightback, though, finishing the job with a break of 99 - The Master proving too strong for The Apprentice on this occasion.

Jones pulls off Trump shock

Duane Jones enjoyed one of the biggest wins of the career as he beat last week's World Grand Prix winner Judd Trump 4-2.

In truth, Trump was never at the races, falling 3-0 behind despite enjoying a host of good chances but he rallied manfully, reducing his arrears to one frame to put Jones under obvious pressure.

The Welshman wasn't perturbed, though, showing the same calm head that saw him reach the semi-finals of the German Masters recently, and he closed out the match with a cool break of 68.

Murphy becomes latest Cahill victim

Shaun Murphy become the latest big-name to fall victim to James Cahill as the rookie progressed to the third round with a 4-2 win.

Cahill beat world number one Mark Selby at the UK Championship earlier this season and despite seeing Murphy draw level at 2-2, held his nerve to win the next two frames and claim another huge scalp.

Lisowski edges out Fu

Jack Lisowski's quest for a first ranking title continued when he beat Marco Fu 4-3 in a high-quality affair.

Lisowski quickly established a 2-0 lead thanks to breaks of 69 and 78 but Fu fought back and levelled the scores at 2-2 with a well-taken run of 87.

He could only watch as Lisowski edged ahead again with a fabulous total clearance of 140 but Fu forced a deciding frame with a break of 71.

Lisowski had the final say, however, finishing the match in style with a wonderful break of 122 - his second century of the match - as he booked his place in the next round.

Williams and Wilson crash out

On a day of shocks in Cardiff, world champion Mark Williams and recent German Masters hero Kyren Wilson were the latest high-profile players to make for the exit door.

Williams' frustrating season continued as he turned in another laboured display in losing 4-2 to Zhang Anda.

Despite trailing 3-1, Williams looked like mounting a serious comeback when closing the gap to one frame with a break of 83 in frame five but he continued to make mistakes and Zhang went on to seal his biggest win of the season.

Meanwhile, Wilson lost 4-3 to Joe O'Connor who turned in a thoroughly impressive display.

O'Connor knocked in breaks of 88, 53, 66 and 65 and although Wilson took the match to a deciding frame, he was always on the back foot as he slipped to a surprise defeat.

Hawkins flies into round three

Barry Hawkins continued his strong recent form with a comfortable 4-2 victory over Ben Woollaston.

Hawkins didn't have to be at his very best but breaks 69 and 77 showed his game to be in good working order as he bids to make amends for last week's near miss at the World Grand Prix.

John Higgins advanced with a 4-2 win over Dominic Dale, while there were also wins for Neil Robertson, Michael Georgiou, Elliot Slessor, Robbie Williams, Jimmy Robertson, Martin O'Donnell, Sam Craigie, Jak Jones and Craig Steadman.
