Useful at his best but hasn't scored in this sphere since December 2023. Acquitted himself well when sixth of 10 here (2¼m) last month but not ideally placed when down the field at Lingfield (2m) since.

Likely just a bit quirky, running creditably in first-time cheekpieces/tongue tie when third of 9 in novice at this course (1½m) 18 days ago (carried head awkwardly). Not discounted returned to handicap company, provided he proves more tractable as he gains experience.

Back to winning ways at Newcastle in October and has remained in form over hurdles/on Flat since, unlucky not to collect when fourth of 12 at Pontefract (1½m, soft) just over a fortnight ago (no room over 2f and snatched up late). He looks poised to win again before long.

Offered something to work on making just third start for this yard after 4 months off when seventh of 9 at Kempton (2m) recently, though that was still a fair way below the best of his Irish form.

Won 1¾m handicap at Yarmouth in June and first past the post at Bath (1¾m, firm) the following month only to be demoted after wandering under pressure and causing interference. Ran poorly at Newmarket on final outing last season and will probably need this on return.

Forecasts

Vaguely Royal (15/8), Swinging London (9/4), Captain Brett (10/3), John Galt (5/1), The Truant (20/1)

Verdict

SWINGING LONDON looked unlucky not to break his duck on turf at Pontefract earlier in the month. Granted better luck in-running returned to all-weather, John Mackie's 8-y-o can make amends at the chief expense of Vaguely Royal, who wasn't ideally placed at Lingfield recently but had acquitted himself well here prior.
