Runner-up sole start in Irish points, but well held on Rules debut here last October and beaten a mile by the winner when second on recent return in a Carlisle novice. Malayalam appears to be the stable No 1 judged on jockey bookings.

Half-brother to 3 winners and opened his account at the third attempt in maiden points. Shaped with abundant promise when going close on Rules debut in 2m Ayr novice hurdle last month and he's clearly the one to beat.

Signs of ability in a bumper and showed a bit more than on his hurdles debut when third of 12 back from 9 months off at Bangor (16.7f, heavy), albeit he was beaten over 30 lengths. Will probably be better off in handicaps later on.

£60,000 3-y-o, £75,000 5-y-o. Half-brother to modest hurdler Martalite. Maiden point winner when last seen in February and it'll be interesting to see how he shapes up in the betting ahead of this Rules debut.

Ended time with Joseph Murphy on a bit of a downer, but was placed on 2 of his 3 starts in maiden hurdles for that yard and is entitled to come on for his reappearance/yard debut spin at Newcastle 18 days ago, discouraging an effort though it was. One to note in the betting.

Fair handicapper on the Flat, winning 3 times over 2m+ this year. Showed aptitude for hurdling when fourth of 14 on debut in this sphere at Musselburgh (15.6f, good to soft), but it's likely that he will come into his own when faced with a stiffer test.

Won a Uttoxeter bumper for Tom Symonds in May, but efforts in this sphere for new yard have lacked spark and Cavalier du Luy is the stable first-string.

Timeform
No show in 2 starts under Rules so far and he's hard to warm to.

Easily landed a 5-runner bumper at Sedgefield (16.8f, soft) last month, building on the promise of his Rules debut second over the same C&D. However, he failed to land a blow starting out over hurdles at Catterick recently and will need to leave that well behind if he's to make an impact here.

No impact in a trio of bumpers for Sandy Thomson last term and hasn't fared any better in 2 starts over hurdles for new yard the last twice.

Forecasts

Cavalier Du Luy (7/4), Malayalam (3/1), Quercus Robur (6/1), William Yeats (13/2), Mr Lincoln (10/1), Count Adhemar (10/1), Another High Five (12/1), Suspected (25/1), Tiggerelli (100/1), The Low Ball (150/1)

Verdict

The clear pick of these is CAVALIER DU LUY, who was successful between the flags during the spring and was just touched off starting out in this sphere at Ayr last month. He is open to improvement and looks sure to win races over hurdles. Fellow point winner Malayalam will be of interest if the market speaks in his favour ahead of this Rules debut, while Mr Lincoln also needs a second look in the betting.
