Brought along steadily in novice company, but hasn't improved a great deal switched to handicaps the last twice and is probably worth taking on back from a 7-month absence.

Placed sole start between the flags and showed a fair level of ability under Rules last season, including when second upped to 2½m on handicap debut at Perth during the spring. However, hasn't managed to build on that this time round, running poorly at Kelso last time, and now tried in cheekpieces.

Showed a bit more than in maidens when sixth of 24 on his handicap debut at Navan (2m, heavy) last time, but needs a step forward now moving back up in trip if he's to play a leading role.

Runner-up in 2m Kelso novice on Rules debut during the spring and while she offered little on handicap bow at Perth in August, her subsequent third back at Kelso over 2¼m the following month was much more like it. This trip could be just the ticket and she's one to consider.

Age: 4|  Weight: 11-0| J: S Mulqueen| T: M A Barnes| OR:  81
Probably flattered when fourth in a novice hurdle at Kelso in May and has failed to build on that by a long chalk in 2 subsequent starts. Needs to take a leap forward now pitched into a handicap.

Put in a decent shift when fourth of 13 off a 10 lb higher mark at Hexham during the spring, but hasn't got close to repeating that level of form since and it's probably best to look elsewhere.

Still to get his head in front and while he showed more when third on handicap debut third over 2m here in March, further progress has not been forthcoming in 2 runs back at this course since returning to action last month.

Efforts in novice hurdles for Patrick Morris last term didn't yield much in the way of promise, but landed a gamble in good style on recent return/handicap debut for new connections here (19.5f, heavy). Was 5 lb out of the weights that day, so he's effectively just 2 lb higher under a 7 lb penalty.

Age: 5|  Weight: 10-6| J: Joe Williamson(3)| T: P A Kirby| OR:  73
Reappearance handicap debut sixth at Sedgefield (19.8f, good to firm) in September offered cause for hope, but he has followed that with a couple of nondescript displays. Cheekpieces applied.

Age: 6|  Weight: 10-5| J: Shane Fenelon(5)| T: F P Murtagh| OR:  72
Placed on a couple of occasions during 2023/24 campaign, but he was safely held back from a 17-month absence (also first run following a wind op) at Kelso 3 weeks ago.

Forecasts

King Gris (4/9), Green Bonnet (13/2), Burning It Up (10/1), Chanceitlucky (12/1), Rock N Roll Champ (20/1), Big Storm Brewing (25/1), Boyneside (25/1), Smart Bucks (25/1), Bray Dale (33/1), Delayed Charm (33/1)

Verdict

There were very few worrying moments for supporters of KING GRIS on his recent handicap/yard debut at this course, with the 5-y-o landing a gamble with minimum fuss. It's not hard to envisage further improvement given his profile and he will prove very hard to beat under a penalty. If able to build on her latest effort Green Bonnet could be the one for the forecast ahead of Smart Bucks, who needs to get back on track now equipped with cheekpieces.
