Strong-travelling sort was progressive last season, scoring over 3m at Market Rasen and Carlisle before signing off with an excellent second of 16 in Midlands National at Uttoxeter in March. Shaped well on return at Cheltenham last month and should improve, for all his yard are yet to hit top gear.

Very much a chaser on the up last season, strong at the finish when landing a hat-trick at this course (24.2f, heavy) prior to chasing home a speedier rival on better ground in the Eider. Caught the eye when a staying-on third on reappearance last month and looks tailor-made for this race.

Ask Brewster56
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-3| J: H Cobden| T: Evan Williams| OR:  129
Ended last season with back-to-back wins (latterly over 3m4f at Cheltenham) and continued his progression with success in a 3m Chepstow handicap on reappearance in October. Thriving and there could be more to come stepping back up in trip with Harry Cobden aboard first time.

Age: 10|  Weight: 11-2| J: S Bowen| T: M Keighley| OR:  128
Novice improved to land a big-field hunter at Cheltenham (32.4f) in May and got back on the up when successful in a 3m1f amateur riders' handicap at Cheltenham last month, looking an out-and-out stayer. Partnered by Champion Jockey for first time and sure to appreciate the step back up in trip.

Age: 7|  Weight: 10-12| J: Caoilin Quinn| T: G & J Moore| OR:  124| C
Successful in back-to-back staying handicaps at Plumpton last winter but jumped poorly when pulled up in the Midlands national. Made a winning return in a 3-runner 2½m handicap here last month and will be suited the return to a longer trip. Should be competitive if he jumps as well here.

Better than even when game winner at Taunton (23f) in February but unable to dominate when well beaten in the National Hunt chase at Cheltenham (29f). Shaped better than the result on comeback at Exeter and no surprise to see him in the mix with a run under his belt. Engaged 3.05 Exeter Friday.

Age: 7|  Weight: 10-6| J: Brendan Powell| T: J Tizzard| OR:  118
Improved in first-time blinkers when off the mark on second chase start at Newbury (23.4f) and backed that up when runner-up in a better race over same C&D in March. Encouraging third over an inadequate test at Exeter on comeback and he's unexposed on first start over marathon trip. Not dismissed.

Forecasts

O'Connell (11/4), Ask Brewster (3/1), Tanganyika (7/2), Invincible Nao (6/1), Hung Jury (8/1), Jupiter Allen (12/1), Rivers Corner (12/1)

Verdict

Ultra progressive last season, course winner O'CONNELL can resume winning ways following a highly encouraging reappearance at Carlisle last month. Ask Brewster is progressing at a rate of knots and is feared most in his bid for a 4-timer, while strong-travelling Tanganyika shaped well on his comeback at Cheltenham and is entitled to improve.
