Bounced back to form to win 5-runner veterans event at Fakenham (24.2f, good) in May. Probably needed the run at Aintree on return last month but needs things to go his way these days. Usual headgear left off.

Plenty of good efforts in defeat last season before finding the Ultima too competitive. Shaped as if amiss at Aintree final start but has had a breathing operation since and starts the new campaign off a tempting mark.

Off the mark at fourth time of asking over fences at Kempton in March and defied a 5-lb rise with a bit more authority than the result suggests at Warwick later that month. Not handicapped out of things yet and must be respected on return for in-form yard.

Did well over hurdles for this yard last season, ending the campaign with a big win at Aintree in April. Was a lightly-raced winning chaser in France but had jumping issues. Likely to need this return with stable going through a quiet spell.

Capitalised on a reduced mark when scoring at Worcester in June and followed up at Market Rasen following month. Good second over C&D next time before excuses at Chepstow last month. Not taken lightly.

Won 3m Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day but went downhill for the rest of the season. However, big step back in the right direction fitted with cheekpieces when third at Uttoxeter when last seen in May. Back on a winning mark now but headgear left off for this return.

Low-mileage 10-y-o who failed to fire in 2 runs last winter atter 11 months off. Given a chance by the handicapper but returns with something to prove.

Forecasts

The Doyen Chief (7/4), Richmond Lake (10/3), Some Scope (5/1), Doctor Ken (11/2), Hold That Taught (7/1), Le Milos (17/2), Deep Cave (11/1), Pull Again Green (14/1)

Verdict

RICHMOND LAKE starts the new season potentially well handicapped so could be the answer having had a breathing operation since his last run at Aintree (folded tamely after looking a major threat early in the straight). The Doyen Chief is still on the up given how he ended last season so must be respected for his in-form yard, with the race-fit Pull Again Green completing the shortlist.
