Proved a revelation over fences last season, winning the National Hunt Handicap at Cheltenham prior to following up in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. Races off 7 lb lower back over hurdles but this is presumably a pipe-opener with bigger chase targets in mind.

Won back-to-back handicaps this time last year. Proved as good as ever when runner-up in the Martin Pipe and did enough to suggest he stays this trip when seventh at Aintree in April. Has developed a fine partnership with this claimer and one to consider if market suggests he's ready to roll.

Enjoyed an excellent season in 2024/25, notching his third victory in a 2½m handicap at Cheltenham in April and looked to be carrying condition prior to falling at the sixth on his return last month. Worth a market check but pedigree offers hope that he'll stay this longer trip.

Ran right up to his best when runner-up at Exeter in February (first and third franked form in Pertemps final subsequently) but underlined his inconsistency when well beaten at Newbury next time. Claims if he can bounce back on seasonal reappearance.

Useful hurdler at his best but endured an underwhelming campaign last season, pulling up on chase debut at this track in February. Has won fresh (following wind surgery) previously and he's not dismissed on the back of another breathing operation.

Five-time winner over hurdles, including a career best at Ascot (23.5f) in February and he backed that up with a solid fifth in a competitive handicap at Uttoxeter next time. Disappointed on final start of season but has undergone wind surgery since and could be much closer to form here.

Produced a career best when landing a 25-runner handicap hurdle at Punchestown (19.3f, good to soft) on latest run in April, suited by the emphasis on stamina. Stepping back up in trip of an 11 lb higher mark and connections may have one eye on more valuable prizes down the line.

Took advantage of a much-reduced mark when landing a 12-runner listed handicap chase at Punchestown (24.5f, good to soft) in May. Ran well from his lower hurdle mark when runner-up on reappearance last season but this looks a deeper race.

Enhanced fine Doncaster record when a fortunate winner of the Great Yorkshire handicap chase but was always on the back foot following a serious error at Aintree last time. Tough ask on rare start over hurdles.

Five-time winner over hurdles for current connections, the latest at Huntingdon (25f) in May and shaped as if still in good heart returning from 4 months off when third at Aintree (24.7f, good) 11 days ago. Makes appeal with race fitness on his side.

Made an encouraging debut for Dan Skelton when chasing home at red-hot winner over 2½m at Worcester and proved better than ever stepping back up in trip when winning a 12-runner handicap hurdle at Chepstow (23.6f) last month. In excellent hands and there could well be more to come.

Forecasts

Tranquil Sea (85/40), East India Express (7/2), Act Of Authority (15/2), Haiti Couleurs (17/2), Lihyan (9/1), Thanksforthehelp (10/1), Samuel Spade (10/1), Bill Baxter (12/1), Emailandy (25/1), Hititi (28/1), Docpickedme (50/1)

Verdict

Race fitness is likely to be an edge here and LIHYAN made an encouraging return when third at Aintree 11 days ago. He's narrowly preferred to recent Chepstow scorer Tranquil Sea who may yet have more to offer on just his third start for Dan Skelton, while Hititi split the first and third from last season's Pertemps Final on his penultimate start and has claims if bouncing back on reappearance.
