Winner of a maiden chase for Thomas Cooper in Ireland last year, but he didn't show much on debut for this yard with first-time cheekpieces enlisted (retained) in a Hexham handicap hurdle in June,

Sold cheaply from James Ewart's yard in the spring, but has proved that ability remains intact in his 3 starts since joining this yard, performing well when sixth of 11 back over hurdles in a C&D handicap last month. Eased 2 lb since and he's not without each-way hope.

Dual winner over fences and good second in a Stratford handicap chase on final run for Micky Hammond last July. However, he failed to fire back in this sphere (hurdles record stands at 0-12) on return/yard debut at Cartmel.

Lost his way for Philip Kirby last season and signs of a revival were not forthcoming on first start for this yard at Uttoxeter in July.

Fairly encouraging start for new connections when third of 3 in handicap hurdle at Worcester (2m, good to soft) back from a 2-month break in July. Failed to build on that when fourth of 9 over this trip at the same course next time, though, and he's now 0-23 over hurdles.

Dominant from the front when recording tenth career success over hurdles at Market Rasen in July. Best effort since when runner-up at Hexham (16.2f, good to firm) recently and this four-time course winner has to enter calculations now moving back up in trip.

Bits and pieces of decent form to his name, but winless following 11 attempts over hurdles and this Irish raider is likely to find one or two too good once more.

Still a maiden following 18 starts in this sphere, but he's been knocking on the door in handicap hurdles at up to 3m here and at Cartmel in recent months. This drop back in trip could be a good move and while he clearly has his limitations, it's not hard to envisage him playing a part.

Confirmed handicap debut promise over 2m in June when landing a C&D handicap the following month. Followed that with a good second back here and latest fifth of 10 at Cartmel was respectable, so there is cause for optimism where this 4-y-o is concerned.

Maiden pointer who showed ability in maiden/novice company in 2022, but very lightly-raced since and ran poorly when last at Market Rasen 15 months ago.

Has found a bit of improvement upped to 2¾m at Cartmel the last twice, finishing third in handicaps off slightly higher marks on soft/heavy ground. Both the forecast quicker ground and this new trip are potentially positive factors. One to consider in a first-time tongue strap.

One-time fair Flat winner for Charlie Fellowes and had been in the doldrums for current connections prior to exceeding all expectations when runner-up over this C&D in May. However, no great surprise that he failed to back that up next time and latest run on the Flat wasn't overly inspiring either.

Forecasts

Top Flight Century (3/1), Kopa Kilana (10/3), Burgundy Man (11/2), Popa Rich (15/2), Malangen (8/1), Bella Union (9/1), Fostered Phil (12/1), Jeepydoff Meel (14/1), Brave Adam (20/1), Willy Nilly (22/1), Ingennio (33/1), Longstone Cowboy (40/1), Ivynator (40/1)

Verdict

In a race devoid of a standout candidate, POPA RICH could be the answer. He has improved for the step up to 2¾m on his last two starts, but it could be that this trip will prove to be even more suitable and he's surely capable of winning a race off this reduced mark. Malangen can be expected to give it a good shot from the front and he is feared most ahead of Burgundy Man and Top Flight Century.
