Having twice been beaten narrowly earlier in the season, improved for the step up to a mile when off the mark in a 6-runner handicap at Ripon (good to firm, 10/3) 15 days ago, winning by neck from Groundhog. Up 3 lb and will need to improve again if he's to follow up.

Little impact in maidens but was much more prominent in the betting on handicap debut when winning an 8-runner apprentice handicap (11/4) at Kempton (7f) 9 days ago, readily (escapes a penalty for that success). Shapes as though 1m will suit and strong claims of landing the double back on turf.

Failed to progress for Ollie Sangster (sold for 3,000 gns) but was well backed and shaped with encouragement on stable debut (following 11 weeks off) when fifth of 9 in a handicap at Wetherby (8f, good to firm) 15 days ago, having been left poorly placed. Interesting to see if she can build on that.

Given a stiff opening mark but has gradually come down the weights and ran her best race to date on penultimate start when runner-up over 1m at Ripon, allowed her own way in front. Shaped as though amiss when well beaten over the same C&D 15 days ago and looks up against it here.

Winner at Carlisle in May but proved a disappointment in her bid to follow up when eighth of 9 in handicap (10/3) at Wetherby (8f, good to firm) 15 days ago, no obvious excuses. Has a bit to prove now.

Some promise in handicaps but again looked tricky when creditable 3¾ lengths third of 6 to Perfidia in handicap at Ripon (8f, good to firm) 15 days ago, wore first-time visor (now discarded). Capable at this level but comes with risks attached.

Forecasts

Verdict

ATMOSPHERE races from the same mark as when readily winning an apprentice handicap at Kempton 9 days ago (due to race off 8 lb higher in future) and can follow up back on turf, having shaped as though this step up to 1m should suit. Optimatum still looked a bit rough around the edges when getting off the mark at Leicester and could improve again. He's respected under a penalty, while Perfidia and Groundhog (separated by a neck at Ripon 15 days ago) can fight it out for minor honours.
