Irish point winner who has regressed from hurdling bow posting two poor efforts at Newcastle (latest when pulled-up 19 days ago). Hooded and needs to find improvement for switch to handicaps.

Hinted at ability prior to falling 2 out at Bangor on hurdling debut in November and shaped as if one for handicaps/longer trips when staying on past beaten horses at Wetherby (16f) 51 days ago. Could be a different proposition now facing a greater stamina test on handicap debut.

Has shown enough in handicap runs over this sort of distance to suggest he capable of winning a race of this nature, forgiven latest effort when chasing a brisk pace over an inadequate trip (sixth of 12, Catterick, 15.7f) and he's one to be interested in stepping back up in distance.

Far from disgraced when fourth of 10 in a stronger event over C&D two weeks ago (was still well in contention turning for home) and is now 2 lb below his last winning mark stepping back down in grade. Interesting contender.

C&D winner shaped as if back in form following wind surgery when respectable sixth of 13 in a handicap hurdle at this venue 2 weeks ago, deserving of extra credit having been hampered by a faller in the earlier part of the race. Back in trip now and chances would be helped if they go a good gallop.

Still a maiden after 17 starts and while he'd have a chance based on his creditable fourth over C&D in November, he posted a disappointing effort on his only completion since and now needs to bounce back in first-time hood and tongue tie combination.

Respectable third over C&D (3 lengths behind second placed Looking Splendid) in November but failed to back that up on next start. Forgiven latest effort at this venue (stamina stretched by 3m) and while he's capable of bouncing back in first-time cheekpieces, others are more consistent.

Sole success came in an Irish maiden hurdle back in March 2022. Showed the benefit of his recent stable debut, fourth of 16 in a handicap hurdle at Newcastle (20.3f, good to soft) in December but regressed on next start at Ayr (seventh of 12) and has a bit to prove now.

Little impact in various events over hurdles and failed to build on promise of stable debut at Kelso in October when down the field (in first time tongue strap) at the same venue the following month. Tongue-tie retained and difficult to fancy on most recent evidence.

Long-standing maiden who has regressed even further this season, cheekpieces having no impact when ninth of 10 in handicap hurdle (40/1) at Sedgefield (19.8f, soft) 11 days ago. Headgear removed and tongue-strap back on remains easy to oppose.

Forecasts

Looking Splendid (3/1), Coral Blue (10/3), Not In Kansas (4/1), Beat The Retreat (5/1), Billable Grant (15/2), Agilulf (8/1), Good Company (25/1), Gone With The Tide (40/1), Luminaries (40/1), Le Fou's Keep (100/1)

Verdict

This certainly isn't the strongest race for the grade, and LOOKING SPLENDID has shown enough in handicaps over this sort of distance to suggest he is more than capable of winning this. Coral Blue performed with plenty of credit in a stronger race over C&D two weeks ago, so he is a danger, as is handicap-debutant Good Company who could be better than what he's shown in novice company.
