Credit to connections who landed 3 of his first 4 starts at Cartmel this term and typically solid efforts since. Took the wrong course when pulled up at Cheltenham last time, so should give another good account.

Career best when winning 4-runner handicap chase at this course (24.2f, good, 15/8) 27 days ago, always holding on. Boasts excellent record here and every chance he'll put up another bold showing.

Maiden hurdle winner last season and this former point scorer has quickly made up into a much better chaser, producing a useful performance when routing his rivals in Devon National at Exeter in February. Didn't fire in Scottish National 7 months ago but can resume progress here.

Much improved since sent over fences and he signed off with a stylish front-running victory in 6-runner handicap chase at Wetherby (24.2f, heavy) in March. Stiff task on reappearance and return to this trip is in his favour, so definite player.

Second in Royal Artillery here before taking a 3½m handicap at Taunton in March. Pulled up in Scottish National on final outing but likely to be back on track on return after a breathing operation.

Career best when winning 9-runner handicap chase at Fontwell (27.7f, good, 13/2) 20 days ago, suited by increase in trip. Unexposed over these marathon distances and should go well again.

Form proved up and down over hurdles/fences last season but firmly back on track with blinkers fitted when readily seeing off 11-rivals in 3m handicap chase at Uttoxeter in May. Failed to beat a rival last time and may find this too competitive.

Lightly-raced winning hurdler for Christian Williams. Progressive sent chasing for his new yard, making it 3 from 3 in 5-runner handicap at Bangor in March. Disappointed next time but could get back on the up with stable flying after 7 months off.

Useful winning handicap hurdler who hasn't quite reached that level as a chaser and unseated at Perth on his final outing last season. Others make more appeal.

Hasn't won for a while and, although his final outing of last season was respectable, he's liable to need this return.

Forecasts

Montgomery (2/1), Mr Vango (3/1), Conkwell Legend (15/2), Unanswered Prayers (8/1), Ballygrifincottage (8/1), Certainly Red (9/1), Top Of The Bill (11/1), Broken Halo (14/1), Tommie Beau (18/1), Dr Kananga (22/1), Collectors Item (25/1)

Verdict

MR VANGO had been highly progressive prior to a blip in the Scottish National at Ayr 7 months ago and, if he gets back on the up now fresh, he could get the better of Montgomery, who fits a similar profile. Certainly Red is another one to consider.
