Back-to-back winner off higher marks over fences in summer 2022 but more miss than hit in various race-types since. Easy enough to look elsewhere.

Fairly useful 5-time winner on the Flat for Ian Williams and taken well to hurdling, winning a 2m Haydock juvenile and 17.5f Musselburgh handicap on his last 2 starts. 7 lb rise fair enough and, provided that there's a decent pace to aim at, he should have a big part to play.

Fair form on the Flat for William Knight and, having changed hands for 85,000 gns, he made the perfect start for new connections at Taunton in December. Late mistakes proved costly when runner-up on handicap bow at the same course (19f, good) last time and solid chance back down in trip here.

Modest maiden hurdler in Ireland for Gavin Cromwell but showed promise for new yard when fourth of 14 in novice at Taunton (16.5f, soft) last month. This mark looks fair but improvement will be needed if he's to open his account here.

Useful on the Flat in Germany and struck at the second time of asking over hurdles in a Plumpton novice in October. No show switched to handicaps since, though, and well beaten on debut for this yard on the level recently.

Forecasts

Golden Maverick (5/6), Swift Hawk (7/4), Western Soldier (12/1), Got Grey (14/1), Byzantine Empire (22/1)

Verdict

This looks between SWIFT HAWK and Golden Maverick, with the former marginally preferred on account of the fact that he may be better equipped than Jamie Snowden's charge should this become tactical, which is a plausible scenario. Golden Maverick is 2-4 over hurdles and remains open to improvement but 2m round here on drying ground could find him out. Got Grey can claim minor place money.
