Happy Retirement To Paul Warren Handicap Hurdle

Off time: 15:01 | Winning time: 5m 14.73s

Independence⁹²

Age: 7| Weight: 12-0| J: Luke Scott⁽⁷⁾| T: Dr R D P Newland| OR: 99

13/2

Fair bumper winner who ran well to finish fourth when last seen over hurdles at Fontwell (21.7f) in May. Below best in a couple of spins on Flat in January but has since made an interesting yard switch and he's worth keeping an eye on back over hurdles.

Form: 34223-4

Abingworth¹⁴

Age: 5| Weight: 12-0| J: Caoilin Quinn⁽⁵⁾| T: G & J Moore| OR: 99| CD

11/4

Shaping up well in handicaps and saw his race out well under less testing conditions when opening his account in a C&D event 2 weeks ago, staying on to lead after the last. 4 lb rise shouldn't prevent another good showing.

Form: 4F3341

Galway Mahler⁷⁶

Age: 6| Weight: 11-11| J: N F Houlihan⁽³⁾| T: K Jewell| OR: 96WS

18/1

Maiden pointer who exceeded market expectations when fifth on Newbury hurdle debut last spring but he's been unable to replicate that level in trio of subsequent starts in maiden/novice company. Had wind op ahead of handicap debut and betting may prove best guide here.

Form: 435P-P7

Cheng Gong⁴⁶

Age: 7| Weight: 11-7| J: J M Quinlan| T: N B King| OR: 92

25/1

Unreliable type but did shape better than bare result when fifth in 10-runner Lingfield handicap (23f) in February, weakening between last 2. However, he ran no sort of race back on the Flat in March.

Form: 55-P0P5

Monty's Award¹¹⁸

Age: 11| Weight: 11-7| J: Philip Armson⁽³⁾| T: A Irvine| OR: 92| D

16/1

Veteran who hit a real purple patch during the autumn, landing handicaps at Fontwell/Huntingdon. Below best at latter venue when last seen in December though, and possible he'll find a couple too good back from 4 months off.

Form: 431123

Newtonian^v1⁵⁶

Age: 6| Weight: 11-5| J: Miss Victoria Malzard⁽⁷⁾| T: O Sherwood| OR: 90

28/1

Fair form when placed in a brace of bumpers. Fifth on hurdle debut early last year but he's essentially disappointed since, again finishing well held in first-time blinkers at Hereford (21.7f) in February. Visor now the headgear of choice back from 56 days off.

Form: 5F-F5P5

Doyen For Money^t1⁶⁹

Age: 5| Weight: 11-5| J: Aidan Coleman| T: A J Honeyball| OR: 90

10/3

Winner of sole start between the flags and encouragement to glean from his midfield effort in a Chepstow bumper on Rules bow in November. Not made much impact in trio of maiden hurdle runs but now gets a crack at handicaps/back up in trip. Likely improver for good stable. Tongue tied.

Form: 1-5466

Hello Sunshine^t¹¹⁸

Age: 7| Weight: 11-5| J: Rex Dingle| T: George Baker| OR: 90

17/2

Winning hurdler (at 20f) who failed to complete in 2 starts over fences late last year (for Paul Webber). Acquired by new connections for £20,000 in January and she's potentially well treated back over hurdles if a yard switch has positive effect.

Form: PP38-FP

Flemen's Tipple¹³

Age: 6| Weight: 11-5| J: Stan Sheppard| T: A Irvine| OR: 90

7/1

Much more like it in handicaps on each of his last 2 starts, again finding only one too good over 25f here 2 weeks ago, albeit making no impression when left in front soon after 2 out. Drops back in trip now.

Form: 705822

West Orchard^t²⁷

Age: 6| Weight: 10-10| J: Brendan Powell| T: J Tizzard| OR: 81

12/1

Looks capable from this mark but he looked far from straightforward when failing to complete in handicaps at Fontwell/Exeter and he disappointed when well beaten fifth in 9-runner Wincanton handicap (21.3f) 4 weeks ago. Usual tongue tie refitted here but he's evidently risky.

Form: 444RP5

One Man Party⁶²

Age: 6| Weight: 10-5| J: J E Moore| T: D G Bridgwater| OR: 76

10/1

Related to plenty of winners but has showed little in trio of maiden/novice hurdle outings to date. Marked step forward required now attentions switch to handicaps.

Form: 0P7

Forecasts

Abingworth (11/4), Doyen For Money (10/3), Independence (13/2), Andapa (13/2), Flemen's Tipple (7/1), Hello Sunshine (17/2), One Man Party (10/1), Forest Jump (10/1), West Orchard (12/1), Invictus De Brion (14/1), Monty's Award (16/1), Galway Mahler (18/1), Cheng Gong (25/1), Newtonian (28/1), Eaton Lady (33/1)

A competitive handicap and with that in mind it could just be worth chancing HELLO SUNSHINE. She never figured either start over fences during the winter but appeals as being potentially well treated back over hurdles and a subsequent yard switch could well revive her. Handicap-debutant Doyen For Money rates a likely improver, particularly back up in trip, with recent C&D winner Abingworth also respected. Independence is another to keep an eye on.
