Proved largely consistent over hurdles and winner of small-field novice handicaps at Southwell and Perth (both 2m) on first two starts in this sphere. The one to beat judged on those exploits, but he was turned over when odds on for a C&D handicap recently.

Off the mark over hurdles in a 17-runner Clonmel maiden (18.7f, heavy) in March, but left Emmet Mullins for just £8,000 and safely held in a novice hurdle on sole start for Mark Gillard the following month. Opposable on chase debut for new yard.

Fairly useful on the Flat and notched second hurdles success in a 16.8f handicap at this course in June. Well held back on the level recently in first-time cheekpieces (retained here with the addition of a tongue strap), but definite chance if taking to fences at the first attempt.

Progressive hurdler this year, winning four handicaps at around 2m. By no means disgraced when fourth of 10 in a Ffos Las novice on the Flat last month, but significant improvement will be needed if he's to make a successful start over fences.

Forecasts

Mascat (1/1), Byzantine Empire (13/8), Noahthirtytwored (10/1), Geni De La Cour (10/1)

Verdict

If MASCAT's jumping passes the test, it would be no surprise to see him make a winning start over fences. Indeed, fellow chase debutants Geni de La Cour and Noahthirtytwored are pretty hard to warm to and while Byzantine Empire was successful on his first two starts in this sphere, he hardly enhanced his reputation when beaten at cramped odds over this C&D last time.
