Made up into a smart sprinter last year, winning similar event at Sandown a year ago. Shaped better than the bare result when ninth in Palace House Stakes on yard debut in April but was it was concerning how quickly he folded at Haydock a month later. Gelded since but best watched.

Readily saw off 8 rivals on Chelmsford's AW in May and having had little go right for him back on turf at Ripon next time, he showed a decent turn of foot to double his tally for the season at Newcastle 15 days ago. No reason why he won't translate that form back to turf here.

Dual winner in 2021 who put a disappointing effort in the Epsom Dash behind him (upset in the stalls and very slowly away) when scoring with a bit up his sleeve at Ripon last month. That was a career-best effort but will need more to feature in this.

Has started 2022 with 4 cracking placed efforts, the latest when 1¾ lengths third to City Walk at Newcastle 15 days ago. Yet to get his head in front in this grade but could run into a place.

Suited by the way race developed when 2 lengths fourth to King's Lynn in Temple Stakes at Haydock on penultimate start but having been withdrawn at the start in the King's Stand, was unable to get near that form in a Group 3 at Newcastle a fortnight ago. Others preferred.

Listed/Group 2 winner as a juvenile. Showed he's trained on with second in French Group 3 on reappearance. Met a bit of late trouble when fifth in Sandy Lane at Haydock next time but back to his best despite a 5 lb penalty when third in Scurry Stakes at Sandown last month. Each-way player.

Seemed to excel herself when third in a listed event at Cork last month but rather predictably, failed to back that effort up at Tipperary 3 weeks later. Readily passed over in this company.

5/1
Tough and likeable type who posted a career best when winning over C&D in May. Unlucky not to finish much closer in big-field handicap at Royal Ascot last month and he's fancied to be in the mix provided he can keep his quirks in check (usually starts slowly).

3-time C&D winner last year, including this corresponding event and the Nunthorpe. Yet to reproduce that form in four subsequent runs but her yard is in fine form and she's a major contender back in company here.

Made a winning debut at Newcastle in May 2021 (race that contained subsequent Group 1 winner Perfect Power amongst others) and barely had to come off the bridle to follow up 13 month on at Bath 4 weeks ago. A potentially smart filly who falls into the 'could be anything' category.

Forecasts

Royal Aclaim (11/4), Winter Power (11/4), Korker (5/1), Caturra (7/1), Justanotherbottle (10/1), Makanah (14/1), City Walk (16/1), Mondammej (22/1), Atalis Bay (22/1), Chocquinto (80/1)

Verdict

Though it's difficult to know what she's capable of at the moment, WINTER POWER gets the tentative nod to regain the winning thread having been successful on all 3 starts over C&D last year (including this contest and Group 1 Nunthorpe). Royal Acclaim falls in to the 'could be anything' category after a couple of novice wins 13 months apart so James Tate's filly can give the selection most to think about, with the slow-starting Korker third on the shortlist.
