Raced 6 times last year, scoring twice, namely maiden on second start and handicap final start, both at this track. Failed to justify support in a first-time hood back over C&D on return but ran well having been up with a sound pace and is still one to be interested in.

Doubled his career tally after 6 months off at Lingfield in January and good efforts all 3 outings since. Solid claims if transferring that form back on turf.

Boasts a steadily progressive profile and enhanced a good strike rate when resuming winning ways at Lingfield (10f) in February. Seen to maximum advantage when third under more positive tactics there last time and returns to turf 2 lb higher.

Well-bred son of Dubawi who was unlucky to bump into Lone Eagle on final 2-y-o start. Made the most of a good opening to get off the mark at Ffos Las (12f) in August, though was made to work hard for it and now drops back markedly in trip.

Confirmed previous promise when opening his account in 6-runner handicap at Newcastle (8f) 44 days ago and looked a shade unlucky not to follow up at Pontefract on Wednesday. Of obvious interest if turned out again quickly.

Verdict

CAROLUS MAGNUS scored twice at this venue last season and, although he couldn't reward support back here on his reappearance, he's still one to be interested in, especially with promising 7 lb claimer Harry Davies now taking over in the saddle. Dingle can give him plenty to think about if transferring his recent improvement back to grass.
