Looked a useful handicapper when winning three times back in 2017 at up to 1m before being off for three years. Looked to retain a fair slice of ability on comeback at Newmarket (1m, good), failed to repeat that effort, now has questions to answer.
Awarded Hamilton (8.3f, soft) handicap last time on a disqualification, enjoyed being back soft ground (headgear on). Career-best last time (this requires a bit more), consistent sort though who should remain competitive via a good attitude.
Returned from six months off last autumn to make a winning handicap debut (looked a long way ahead of mark) over 1m at Newmarket. Can obviously operate when fresh, up 8lb returning for a second handicap having already won a C&D novice.
Failed to make-up for being disqualified at Hamilton (beat Redarna) over 8.3f when held in midfield at Haydock last time again over the same trip (faded last furlong). Off the same mark here, remans of interest but would be excite more back at 7f.
Out-and-out front runner; three-time winner over 1m in handicaps last year, slips back to his last winning mark here. Hasn't fired at Haydock the last twice at up to 8.2f (may have been flying too high last time), may face some pace pressure.
C&D winner last year (took Thirsk Hunt Cup) off this mark, took advantage of a 4lb lower mark to win on his return at Beverley (8.5f, good/soft), also helped by a good record fresh. Ought to be competitive again given his profile, sound claims.
Had an excellent 2019 winning four times in handicaps the last two off higher marks than he runs today. Largely struggled this season, took a step back in the right direction aided by a falling mark last time, repeat makes gives him a chance.
Hold-up individual, produced his best performance for this yard on AW/Newcastle (1m), helped by a strongly-run race. Not in the same form last time (different scenario), returns from a break (has gone well fresh), needs things to fall right.
Three wins from the last four finding more progress at Hamilton (8.3f, soft) to deal with a well-treated rival last time. A likeable to type with a good attitude he responds well to pressure, improvement may not have plateaued as yet, one to note.
Took this in 2018 off a 2lb lower mark (won off this mark last year), neither race this term has gone to plan. Got no cover on reappearance over 1m, given to much to do over 9.8f at Ripon last time, in better heart than form figures suggest.
Failed to pull off front-running tactics again when trying to follow-up his Ripon win off a career-low mark, going off too hard at Haydock (8.2f, good) last time. Unlikely to get an easy lead, 9lb above his last winning mark now, others preferred.
Sole 3yo in the field, looked hard ride making handicap debut after 10 months off (hanging left throughout), finished well beaten. Won at Pontefract last year over 6f, interesting to see if the attitude last time was inexperience or something else.
Forecasts
Top Rank (5/4), Hortzadar (7/2), Star Of Southwold (6/1), Silver Dust (10/1), Garden Oasis (12/1), Mikmak (20/1), Kryptos (22/1), Redarna (25/1), Hayadh (28/1), Custodian (33/1), Fennaan (50/1), Club Wexford (66/1)
Plenty of C&D form on display with four of these holding that epithet the pick looking to be the James Tate trained TOP RANK who remains lightly-raced and capable of further progress despite an 8lb rise he’s won fresh before. He won’t have it all his own way, Silver Dust may well have progress in him having been in good form of late. A good pace is likely with Club Wexford and Garden Oasis in the field a scenario that should enable another of the C&D winners Hayadh to get involved along with Fennaan who needs a strong pace to aim at. Of those at longer prices Mikmak shouldn’t ne ignored he’s far better than his form figures suggest this year.
