Maiden winner on debut at Killarney and not disgraced when fourth of five in a Curragh Group 2 when highly tried on his second start, despite being beaten over 10l. Assessor may have let him lightly for handicap debut.

Improved from maiden company to win a Gowran handicap on return; handicapper certainly didn't miss him (raised 16lb) but finished a good third in competitive heat at Navan since and winner has franked that form; can go well from another 2lb higher.

Beat a couple of subsequent winners in a decent looking fillies' maiden at Galway in October; untried on quicker ground but step up in trip should suit and she's got a workable opening mark if ready to go on her return; unproven on quicker ground.

Didn't need to improve from a promising debut to win a Dundalk maiden second time out but disappointed on handicap debut when sent off a 2/1 favourite at Gowran last month and yard have stronger claims with Thundering Nights.

Won a Gowran maiden on debut but looked unsuited by the drop back in trip when fifth of seven at Cork last weekend; will need more to defy this mark on handicap debut but this longer distance will suit.

0-5 in maidens; beautifully bred (brother to Churchill and Clemmie) so may do better at some stage but he needs to improve on what he's shown so far if he's going to defy this mark.

Won twice in handicap company last year and looked in need of the run when a respectable sixth of nine at Navan on return; has shown his best form in testing conditions so probably needs rain to arrive.

Well beaten on handicap debut at Dundalk in January but has shown he might be capable from this mark in two runs since the restart. Shapes like this step up in trip will suit so warrants respect.

Sent off at big prices in a trio of maidens and ran accordingly but justified favouritism when winning at Roscommon on return; 9lb rise in much tougher company demands more though.

Sondheim17

Never threatened in four starts last year but it was a promising first run of the year when third of 14 (no chance with very well handicapped winner) at Leopardstown at the start of the month; 3lb rise looks a bit harsh but may build on that run.

Beaten a long way in a trio of maidens but it was a mildly more encouraging effort at Cork latest; pedigree suggests he may improve for this longer trip and assessor has given him a chance for handicap debut.

Forecasts

Sonnyboyliston (13/8), Thames River (11/2), Paradiso (6/1), Charlie Bassett (6/1), Thundering Nights (9/1), Camorra (10/1), Alexei Vronsky (11/1), David Garrick (14/1), Sondheim (14/1), Collaborating (18/1), Simply True (20/1), Lord Park (33/1)

Verdict

It's hard to rule out any of these with several of the runners potentially ahead of their handicap marks but CAMORRA contested a Group 2 as a juvenile and his opening mark looks on the lenient side if ready to go on return. Down at the other end of the weights Sondheim might be able to build on his comeback run at Leopardstown while Joseph O'Brien has a strong hand with his pair of runners with Thundering Nights the preferred option in the hope he's ready first time up this season.
  1. Camorra
  2. Sondheim
  3. Thundering Nights
