Lightly-raced for his age (7-29), but there's no denying that he possesses plenty of ability; now rated 9lb higher than when scoring by a unchallenged 14L here (3m, good) in August 2019; a career best performance is required.
Versatile in terms of discipline, but most at home on genuinely good ground; won both starts over fences (2m-2m4f) last season, and arrives fit and fresh after a pleasing run on the Flat (fourth) at Newmarket 25-days ago.
Notched a hat-trick of wins early last season (2m3½f-2m5f), but found life increasingly tough from his elevated mark thereafter; absent since finishing sixth (of 12) at Cheltenham on New Year's Day; others are better handicapped.
Impossible to knock given the overall progressive nature of his form over hurdles (4-8); seeks the four-timer after comfortably seeing off Highway One O One at Fontwell (2m3½f, good) last October; sits another 4lb higher.
Irish import (ex-John Nailen); most impressive when winning a Grade 3 handicap hurdle at Ascot (1m7½f, good to soft) on debut for Olly Murphy in December 2017 - beat Silver Streak and Verdana Blue; absent since (for 921 days).
Pulled up in first-time cheekpieces at Kempton (2m5f, soft) on Boxing Day; much more like it when runner-up in a jumpers' bumper at Wolverhampton (2m½f) two months later; merits consideration in an open contest.
Easy winner in the mud at Uttoxeter (2m7½f, soft) in October 2019, but has failed to scale those dizzy heights in six subsequent starts (three of which have come on the AW); others thought more reliable.
Largely consistent juvenile hurdler (3213), with that win coming on soft-ground at Fontwell (2m3f) last November; hasn't fired in three Flat starts during 2020 - finished last of eight at Chepstow (2m, good) just over a fortnight ago.
All three of her wins have come on Flat tracks (Huntingdon, Worcester & Southwell); 6lb higher than when comfortably dispatching The Kings Baby over C&D (soft) last October; can't be discounted despite returning to action from a six-month absence.
C&D winner (June 2018); low-key in two starts over hurdles since returning from an aborted spell over fences (2-7); still rated 9lb higher than when springing a 25-1 surprise at Haydock (2m3f, good) in April 2019.
With Paul Nicholls when justifying favouritism in a novices' chase here (1m7½f, good) in April 2018; set some stiff tasks by Dan Skelton over hurdles last season; mid-division finish in the Hogmaneigh Hurdle at Musselburgh on New Year's Day.
Brought his record on the AW to 0-19 when making moderate headway at Chelmsford (1m6f) three weeks ago; hasn't raced under National Hunt rules since scoring over fences at Cartmel (2m1½f) in May 2018; hurdles mark (of 120) looks easier.
Forecasts
Peter The Mayo Man (3/1), Byron Flyer (9/2), Hunters Call (13/2), Mason Jar (13/2), Chapmanshype (7/1), Oscar Rose (15/2), Rhythm Is A Dancer (10/1), Paseo (14/1), Stynes (28/1), Theatrebar (50/1), Final Choice (50/1), Kentford Heiress (80/1)
On the first day back over obstacles since the lockdown, Southwell Racecourse offers a wide open Class 2 Handicap Hurdle as the highlight. Olly Murphy brings another long-term absentee back into the fold in the shape of the talented Hunters Call - a most impressive winner of a Grade 3 contest at Ascot in December 2017. With C&D winning form in the book, Fergal O'Brien's mare Oscar Rose shouldn't be discounted off a light-weight, while it's impossible to knock the four-timer seeking Chapmanshype. However, for small-stakes the tentative advice is the Ian Williams-trained runner BYRON FLYER, who tends to revel on genuinely good ground (forecast).
- Byron Flyer
- Chapmanshype
- Rhythm Is A Dancer
