Best on a sound surface, so should have favourable underfoot conditions; failed to beat a single rival on his recent comeback run at Beverley (7½f), albeit he's never really fired fresh in the past either; drops back to 6f.
Pacy; was bang-in-form last August, winning over 6f at Carlisle (good to soft), before finishing second best at Catterick (6f, good); remains feasibly handicapped if ready to rock and roll off a 264-day absence; Alston stable are going well of late.
Stuck his neck out willingly when scoring on the AW at Newcastle (7f) last September; somewhat underwhelming since, and the handicapper has cut him slack accordingly; stablemate of Epeius.
Yet to win on turf (0-13) - was beaten a neck by Power Player over 1m here last September; progressive on the AW during the winter months (two wins & three seconds at Newcastle, 5f-6f); is steadily rising in the weights.
Stablemate of Blindingly; winner of a lesser Class 5 handicap at Newcastle (6f) in May 2019; was knocking on the door back there during October and November, but nowhere near that level of form when last in competitive action; vulnerable?
Lightly-raced 6f Thirsk maiden winner (eight runs); arguably started off life in handicap company from a high enough mark; is easing in the weights, and shaped reasonably well when fourth at Wolverhampton (6f) 12 days ago.
5-31 career, with all of those successes coming over 6f on either good/good to firm ground; finished third (beaten 4½L) to a stablemate of Redrosezorro at Thirsk (6f, good) last week; one of the likelier types.
Veteran of 98 races (nine wins); most likely would be suited should any sharp showers materialise (an outside possibility); finished 4L third to Captain Dion (Catterick 6f, soft) on his final start of the season.
Bar a positive effort at Newcastle (second), it's been all downhill since she broke the duck in a weak fillies' maiden over C&D (good to firm) last May; the application of blinkers and a return across the border are possible catalysts for a revival.
Forecasts
Mr Wagyu (10/3), Be Proud (4/1), Redrosezorro (5/1), Epeius (11/2), Obee Jo (6/1), Blindingly (15/2), Woodside Wonder (14/1), Raspberry (28/1), B Fifty Two (66/1)
Mr Wagyu has conditions in his favour, so appeals as one of the likelier candidates off the back of a fair comeback third at Thirsk last week, while Tim Easterby's Obee Jo is starting to become more attractively weighted. However, with Eric Alston's horses in such positive early season form, we'll elect to take a chance on the race-fitness of the pacy REDROSEZORRO.
- Redrosezorro
- Mr Wagyu
- Obee Jo
