Third over 1m on his AW debut here after turf wins at Ayr and Carlisle last year showed him to be a useful handicapper. Bounced back from a rare poor run on that occasion; run well before off a break, ought to be competitive off last winning mark.

Previously with Tom Dascombe makes his stable debut having failed to make an impression on his only previous handicap start (ran too free). Only won a weak minor event at Catterick (beat two rivals) so does have a bit to prove returning to action.

Course winner over 1m (middle leg of an early career hat-trick); failed to win since successful on handicap debut (final leg of hat-trick). Consistent in this company though but does need a well run race to be seen at his best, not one to write-off.

Won just once from 10 starts last year recording a belated first handicap win at Thirsk (7f, good/soft), found plenty in closing stages. Not seen to best effect after that including on AW debut here over 1m (trip too far); returns after wind op.

C&D winner early last year when making handicap debut (faced more exposed rivals) off a 3lb lower mark. Failed to build on that success (ran poorly back on turf); struggled to get involved on AW when last seen, now gelded on his return to action.

Only seen twice since landing the first two starts of his career (C&D winner on debut). Presumably been hard to train; finished last on both starts last year (tailed off both times), back to his last winning trip but it may take more to revive him.

Fairly useful on his day but without a win since 2017 (only nine runs since then) having had some long breaks. Ran creditably on the AW a couple of time last year (including when last seen); headgear worn last two starts now removed for stable debut.

Only raced once away from here in five career starts recording two C&D wins the latest on his second handicap run (handicap debut strong form). Only beat four rivals last time (moved well through the race); looks progressive off a workable mark.

All his career wins (nine) have come at this trip but he has looked to struggle off breaks of 150 days plus (likely to need the run). Twice a winner last year only one of his victories has come on the AW; capable sort but others make more appeal.

Yet to win beyond 6f both his wins last year coming at that trip on soft ground. Form tailed off a little towards the end of last year but will find this hotter than the company his last brace of wins have come in; trip doubts mean he's passed over.

All wins have come on turf/Fibresand with his last four wins coming in purple patch on the artificial surface over 7f. Failed to land a five-timer when last seen (went too freely) on his beloved Fibresand; strong traveller, no experience on Tapeta.

Forecasts

Fortamour (11/4), Merchant Of Venice (7/2), Tadleel (5/1), Modakhar (8/1), Global Warning (10/1), Wild Hope (10/1), Mogsy (12/1), Queen's Sargent (16/1), John Kirkup (16/1), Suitcase 'n' Taxi (20/1), Antagonize (40/1), Twin Appeal (50/1)

Verdict

The form shown by FORTAMOUR in his two C&D wins looks progressive and despite only beating four rivals last time he moved well through the race and looked as though he was still up to defy his new mark and adding a further Tapeta success to his CV. Merchant Of Venice another course winner will have to cope with shorter trip than he’s tried for a while but if he’s granted a strong gallop he looks the main danger. The lightly-raced Modakhar returns from wind surgery having run one of his best races when last seen out over 1m here with his stable in decent form. Wild Hope a consistent sort and Tadleel making his stable debut are two others who could get involved.
  1. Fortamour
  2. Merchant Of Venice
  3. Modakhar
