Still a maiden (0-7); 3lb lower than when run out of things by Dance Fever in a 6f Windsor novice (good to firm) in September.

Failed in his hat-trick bid at Chelmsford (6f) three weeks ago but has already proved to be a shrewd acquisition by the Dixon brothers; 6lb higher than when beating Penmellyn (runs at Newcastle Weds) over 7f at Kempton.

Cost £55,000 as a yearling; by far his best run to date was on his second start on heavy ground at Nottingham (5f); eased 2lb in the weights since his Lingfield handicap debut (5f) three weeks ago.

Caught the eye when finishing well (fourth) at Newcastle (6f novice) on her penultimate start and probably found the company too competitive back there latest; eye-shields are applied for handicap debut; a possible player.

Coach House colt; in the mix when finishing fourth to the Grant Tuer-trained Lezardrieux on handicap debut at Newcastle (5f) recently; seems to be improving and wasn't totally disgraced on his previous start at Southwell; chance.

Maiden (0-10); has generally ran her usual solid race on turf (5f-6f) more often than not; off since finishing fourth to Carmel (beaten 3½L) at Musselburgh (5f, soft) in October; AW debut.

Turned the form book upside down when winning a 7f nursery at Newcastle in September, and wasn't far off that level of form when placed over 1m there latest; it's uncertain as to how he'll handle this drop in trip (to 6f).

Forecasts

We're Reunited (2/1), Speed Merchant (5/2), Havana Dawn (4/1), Mews House (5/1), Rathagan (15/2), Slingshot (9/1), Constitutional (10/1), Maybellene (50/1)

Verdict

A trappy nursery which lacks a standout contender, with the possibility that relevant clues will emerge from the fixture at Newcastle on Wednesday. Havana Dawn is declared in first-time blinkers (5.15pm), while the in-form Speed Merchant would see his prospects further enhanced with a positive showing from the well-fancied Penmellyn (4.15pm). However, a speculative tilt is taken at the handicap debutante SLINGSHOT who sports eye-shields for her first attempt on Fibresand. She has shown glimmers of ability on Tapeta at Newcastle (in novice races) and could be just the type to thrive for the switch to a more realistic level of competition.
  1. Slingshot
  2. Speed Merchant
  3. Mews House
