Didn't shape too badly (in the context of this race) when third to an improver at Southwell last time and looked on the way back to form. Conditions fine again and this is not a strong event, so could easily take a hand late in the day.

Wenceslaus34
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-11| J: Brendan Powell| T: D G Bridgwater| OR:  104| D
11/4
In good form at present, winning at Plumpton and then bumping into a well-treated one at Uttoxeter last time; new mark has kicked in so more is needed, but step back up in trip may well help, and he holds e/w chances at worst.

Mr Dorrell Saget136
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-11| J: L P Aspell| T: O Sherwood| OR:  104
12/1
Sturdy individual that's made for fences, and there were possibly excuses for a below-par chase introduction at Taunton last month; on a dangerous looking mark if he can get it together today, and yard among the winners, so could go better today.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-11| J: Joshua Moore| T: S Edmunds| OR:  104| BF
7/2
Placed four of his last five starts but you'd be hard pushed to say he's progressing as he ought to be doing; never really in the hunt for the win at Huntingdon last time and needs more against now he's dropping back in trip.

Lady Master34
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-5| J: David Bass| T: Mrs Caroline Bailey| OR:  98| BF
10/1
Placed twice here last year but a beaten favourite on both occasions and in truth, is now starting to look disappointing after another poor effort (favourite again) at Uttoxeter last time. Ability is clearly there but jury is out at present.
6
Horse silk
Joly Maker34
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-4| J: R P McLernon| T: J & A O'Neill| OR:  97| D
4/1
Cheeky ½l winner at Southwell in October and two subsequent efforts suggest he's keeping his form better than has sometimes been the norm with him. Trip/ground fine again and he'll be held up for his customary late run again. Solid chance.
7
Horse silk
Torrent Des Mottesp,t34
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-5| J: Benjamin Poste| T: J R Cornwall| OR:  84| D
16/1
On a good mark on the best of his form of last year and has hinted (no more than that) that another win could be around the corner after some okay efforts this autumn. Chance to dominate a small field here, and not discounted.

Midnight Owlet36
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-0| J: L Treadwell| T: Miss C Dyson| OR:  79
33/1
Moderate at best and although he did win one at Taunton in March, two pulled-up efforts on his last two starts do not bode well for his chances here. Easy enough to pass over.
9
Horse silk
Agentleman9
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-0| J: K Yeoman(7)| T: P Winks| OR:  77
11/1
One win in 34 starts tells you plenty about his chance, even in this weak contest, and although he was second at Southwell last time out, was still beaten 15l. Races from out of the handicap here and needs a big improvement in form.

Forecasts

Wenceslaus (11/4), Land League (7/2), Joly Maker (4/1), Clondaw Storm (7/1), Lady Master (10/1), Agentleman (11/1), Mr Dorrell Sage (12/1), Torrent Des Mottes (16/1), Midnight Owle (33/1)

Verdict

Not many of these come into the race with convincing profiles. Joly Maker is one that does though, and if he continues in the same vein as he has been doing, looks sure to be thereabouts. Land League now comes with a few risks after one too many placed efforts and similar comments apply to Lady Master as well. MR DORRELL SAGE has always appealed as the type that would do better over fences and he has been found a good opportunity to showcase his talents today. Wenceslaus may be the biggest danger, although Torrent Des Mottes can't be allowed an easy lead.
  1. Mr Dorrell Sage
  2. Wenceslaus
  3. Joly Maker
