Likes to race prominently and is well drawn to attack; displayed battling tendencies to repel all challengers (drew right away) when winning at Goodwood (1m1f, good) in August; 4lb higher; has done much of his AW racing at Kempton.
Down the field in the Consolation Race for the Northumberland Plate (2m) when last racing on the AW; won a small field affair at Newmarket (1m4f, good to firm) subsequently; others appear to be better treated.
Comfortable winner of a Class 3 handicap at Bath (1m2f, good to firm) in August; has struggled to make her mark in Listed contests since; lightly raced on the AW (0-1) and this is a far more realistic assignment; blinkers are applied.
4-13 on turf (0-3 on the AW); most effective between 1m and 1m1f; remains 2lb higher than when beating Star Shield by ¾L at Redcar (1m, good to firm) in August; won't be travelling south purely for the good of his health.
Weakened quickly from the furlong pole when fifth of six to Crossed Baton in the Listed Churchill Stakes over C&D 12 days ago; this race represents an ease in grade; narrow winner at Epsom (1m2f, good) in July.
Unbeaten in three starts over C&D (promoted to first place on one occasion); 4lb lower than when landing the odds by a neck in April; produced a reasonably solid run at Kempton latest (didn't quite stay 1m3f?); holds every chance.
Hasn't won since the turn of the year but is impossible to knock for consistency; likes to force the early pace and paid the price for doing so when weakening late on (third) at his favoured Wolverhampton recently.
Authoritative winner of a Class 4 handicap at Bath (1m2f, firm) in May but absent since flopping in a stronger race at Newbury a few weeks later; is likely to face plenty of competition for the lead; vulnerable as a 3yo?
Forecasts
El Ghazwani (6/4), Universal Gleam (5/1), Michele Strogoff (6/1), Sky Defender (13/2), Lawn Ranger (7/1), Time Change (9/1), Mr Scaramanga (16/1), Stamford Raffles (25/1)
A quality handicap which promises to be run at a fierce pace with any number suited by front-running tactics, including the Goodwood scorer Lawn Ranger, the eased-in-grade Churchill Stakes fifth Mr Scaramanga and the Wolverhampton regular Michele Strogoff. Of the remainder, Hugo Palmer's El Ghazwani defends an unbeaten C&D record (3-3), while the Keith Dalgleish-trained Universal Gleam won't be making the long journey south simply for the good of his health. However, in a very tight and trappy race small stakes are aimed at the blinkered filly TIME CHANGE who has found Listed assignments overly competitive since scoring at Bath in August.
- Time Change
- El Ghazwani
- Universal Gleam
