Caught the eye when sixth to the useful Nordano on debut at Chepstow last month, and will be all the better for that experience here. This doesn't look the strongest of events and a step forward on that can see him take a hand.

Rated 71 on the Flat and stayed 12f, so should find this a suitable test for hurdles debut; given connections, was presumably always going to try hurdles and he has the flat speed for this so if jumping fluently, has a clear chance.

Rated 61 when winning a Goodwood seller back in August, after which he was purchased by current connections; pulled up no trees on hurdles debut at Huntingdon earlier in the month and needs to leave that well behind here.

Placed on all three starts on the Flat for Simon Crisford, and chased the classy Ranch Hand home at Southwell when last seen (albeit at a distance); purchased for 38,000gns by current connections and has scope for hurdles; worth a second look.
6
Horse silk

Looked regressive on the Flat but did at least arrest the slide with a second at Chepstow when last seen, albeit in modest company; rated 61 and might need others to underperform if he's to get close.

Zamani14

14/1
Won a couple on the Flat in Germany but rated just 60 in three starts on the Flat, and looks modest; needs the switch to hurdling to spark some dramatic improvement.

On third trainer already after 10 starts, has some ability but clearly hard to win with and although her hurdling debut at Wincanton last month wasn't terrible, it leaves her with a bit to find here. May do better, but comes with risk.

One of the lesser lights in John Gosden's yard when on the Flat, rated just 64 and not progressing; possible that hurdles may buck her ideas up, but there's a lot to take on trust now; has joined Charlie Longsden.

Some promise in four starts on the Flat for Roger Varian and came back from an absence for new connections to finish third on hurdles debut. Stamina will always be of some concern and probably needs it to stay dry; chance if so.

Winner over 12f ar Vichy back in May, now with Philip Hobbs; breeding suggests we won't seen the best of her until getting more of a trip (and possibly some fences) but has to be highly respected, and that Flat win shows she has some speed.

Forecasts

Gavrocheka (15/8), Group Stage (2/1), Say The Word (7/1), Rowland Ward (7/1), Tribal Commander (11/1), Arctic Snow (11/1), Zamani (14/1), Fleursals (14/1), Fanfaronade (20/1), Queen's Soldier (33/1), Alfa Dawn (33/1)

Verdict

The market should prove informative as to the chance of Gavrocheka, who had the speed (despite her pedigree) to win over 12f in France and represents the Hobbs/McManus axis here, but preference is for ROWLAND WARD in the hope the rain stays off. He was improving on the Flat when last seen and has the scope for hurdles, so if he takes to the discipline, could be very useful indeed. Say The Word and Group Stage are the others to consider.
  1. Rowland Ward
  2. Gavrocheka
  3. Group Stage
