1-19 career; sole win came for Sophie Smith in a Class 6 lady amateur's handicap at Redcar (1m2f, soft) last autumn (6L winner); kept ticking over this season, slowly slipping back to a more manageable mark; is untested on Fibresand.

Won for Jim Goldie at Hamilton (1m1f, good to firm) in June and has solid historic form at this track (mainly for Ian Jardine); beaten 4L by Gas Monkey on debut for Mick Appleby at Newbury (1m4f, soft) in August; not as strong since.

Veteran; no win since June 2018 (occasionally placed); posted a solid front-running shift when beaten 1L by Jan De Heem in a similar amateur riders' contest at Catterick (1m6f, good to firm) 56 days ago; 2lb higher; 1-3 AW.

Travelled supremely well throughout when rediscovering the winning thread at Newcastle (1m4f) a fortnight ago; met trouble in the run when a beaten odds-on favourite at Wolverhampton subsequently; 6lb higher.

26-race maiden (0-12 on the Flat); has left the care of Gordon Elliott since finishing 8L third of five to Chocolat Noir in a 3m handicap hurdle at Perth (heavy) in September; others boast far stronger credentials.

Has won just once in 37 starts (over 1m3½f (soft) at Yarmouth in September 2017); shaped encouragingly when a 28-1 runner-up to Blyton Lass over 1m4f here on her penultimate start; has failed to back up since at Chelmsford.

Like Seventil has a poor career strike-rate (1-37); has continued to ease in the weights since leaving the care of Peter Bowen; it's difficult to ascertain exactly how much he has too offer on the Flat; safer to look elsewhere.

Shown definite improvement since switched to Fibresand (21); just 1lb higher than when beating Cape Agulhas by ½L (Keith third) over 1m4f latest (in a Class 6 classified stakes); it's possible that there's more improvement to come in blinkers.

6/1
Maiden (0-9); wasn't beaten all that far by the reopposing Risk Mitigation on his penultimate start (1m4f), yet folded worryingly tamely over C&D (5-4f) a week later and is essentially difficult to fancy on that evidence.

Verdict

A competitive finale in which it's possible to make a reasoned argument for any number of those declared, although equally it's also acknowledged that some are very difficult to win with (namely Seventil). Restive is effective on Fibresand and has the assistance of Serena Brotherton in the saddle, while Mamdood travelled smoothly when scoring at Newcastle (1m4f) on his penultimate start. However, the three-year-old RISK MITIGATION has clearly been suited by making the switch to Fibresand. Off a low weight, and in newly applied headgear (blinkers) he should continue to progress.
  1. Risk Mitigation
  2. Mamdood
  3. Restive
