Started over 6f but unsuccessful in decent races before being tried over 7f in a Class 4 handicap at Kempton last month. Won that race in a gritty manner but held twice since. More to prove now over 1m for the first time.

Shown improvement in his last two starts but needs another step forward now upped to a mile for the first time. Also needs to better the form of his previous attempt on Tapeta when he was brushed aside in a modest novice at Newcastle in August.

Untried on this surface and connections opt for a try with blinkers after the gelding's last two starts yielded very little. Had previously won a four-runner race at Bath (1m, good to firm) but the form is ordinary.

Improved effort at Windsor earlier in the month bodes well now he's proved a mile is well within his compass. He's a half-brother to a Listed placed miler on the AW, so the surface should suit; high on the shortlist.

Already had 10 attempts at getting off the mark and, although this is a lot easier than his latest assignment (ninth in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy), others are open to a good deal more progress. Could still be thereabouts for a place, though.

Possible she didn't handle the Fibresand when she disappointed at Southwell but the filly had previously been on an upward trajectory so it's very feasible she can bounce back. She's more proven over 1m than most and can ensure this is a good test.

Another who has made good strides without actually winning a race up to press; but the ability is there and, with AW winners in his pedigree, the switch to Tapeta isn't too daunting. Interesting if supported on his first run over a mile.

Wears a visor after a modest effort behind Talap at Windsor 17 days ago and has a bit to find on a literal reading of that form. Also untried on Tapeta so far so the balance of form leaves him vulnerable.

Up in trip for his Tapeta debut but indications from his breeding suggest the surface won't be an issue. He cost 290,000 gns but needs a big step forward to start justifying the faith shown with the outlay.

Forecasts

Talap (11/4), Anglo Saxson (5/1), Cheat (11/2), Clay Regazzoni (6/1), Expensive Dirham (13/2), Dark Kris (7/1), Lady Red Moon (7/1), Abadie (12/1), Top Buck (12/1), Sir Charles Punch (12/1), Three Fans (14/1)

Verdict

Talap is a good starting point and may well brush aside the 5lb hike for what was a decent effort on his handicap debut last time out. However, the switch to Tapeta might well suit EXPENSIVE DIRHAM and, given her proven stamina over the trip, she has fewer questions to answer than most. She does need to bounce back from a poor run on the Fibresand last time, so it might also pay to factor in a saver on Dark Kris pushing the selection all the way to the line. Anglo Saxon and Abadie are others to note with interest on their first starts on Tapeta.
