Talented apprentice takes off a valuable 3lb so effectively he isn't actually top-weight. However, he is high enough in the weights for what he has achieved of late, having gone off the boil with a trio of uninspiring efforts in this grade of late.

Just behind Sophia Maria when last seen finishing third at Catterick (7f; good to firm) in September. That was a definite return to form and so he could be well treated off 7lb below his last winning mark.

Latest two runs which have came over 6f/7f at this track have been woeful and he remains high enough in the handicap despite those heavy defeats. Not won for over a year now, and cannot be fancied until showing more encouragement.

Hard to knock his consistency of late with a trio of respectable third-placed efforts over 5f/6f on AW. Still 3lb above last winning mark though, so can only be recommended for a place at present.

May have had excuses when dropped back in trip to 6f at this track last time out. Had been in consistent form prior to that flop with a C&D victory achieved in August. Step back up in trip is a positive. 5lb above last winning mark.

Not tasted success since winning over 6f here in December. Claims on the form of his second at Leicester (7f; good to firm) in September, but not in same form in two subsequent starts. Comes into this with risks attached.

Was in tremendously consistent form in the early part of the season, but his form has curtailed recently. Never looked like he was going to get involved when eighth over 6f at this track at the start of the month. Readily opposed.

Bit more encouraging when just failing to make the frame at Chelmsford (7f; standard) last time, but a fair bit more is still needed even if he reproduces that level of form. Still 2lb above last winning mark.

Just beaten over 6f here last week when runner-up. Genuine player if reproducing that effort which was much more promising than his sixth at Wolverhampton (6f; standard) the time before (sent off at 9-4f).

Won for the first time since August last year when taking advantage of a reduced mark to score at Catterick (7f; good to firm). 4lb higher now which tempers enthusiasm slightly, but he has won off higher in the past.

Managed to secure a pair of wins in August, but rose in the handicap as a result. Still 4lb above his last winning mark, and didn't show any obvious signs of a return to form when 10th of 14 at Southwell (1m; standard) recently.

Finished second over C&D in September, but then went one better (again over C&D) by shedding his maiden tag at the 14th attempt most recently when well-supported (11/8f). Things have obviously clicked for him, and so he is feared off 5lb higher.

Arrives here in fine form. Only found one too good in follow-up bid when second at Musselburgh (7f; good to firm) last time out. Is now going the right way in handicaps, and so is one to keep on the right side of.

11-race maiden having her first run for her new yard after leaving Gavin Cromwell. On form she would need to step up quite a bit to play a part, but she may benefit for the change of scenery. Thus, a market check is strongly advised.

Forecasts

Billy Wedge (9/2), Uncle Charlie (11/2), Peachey Carnehan (6/1), Sophia Maria (8/1), Jack Randall (10/1), Tobeeornottobee (10/1), Dawn Breaking (12/1), Majdool (14/1), Cameo Star (16/1), Christmas Night (16/1), Gorgeous General (20/1), Ishebayorgrey (25/1), Hummingbird (50/1), Dirchill (66/1)

Verdict

Plenty of these can be ruled out with confidence, & after her lifeless run over 6f at this track at the start of the month, it would be easy to oppose Sophia Maria. However, she may have found the drop to 6f against her then, as she had previously been in career-best form over 7f. In terms of finding the winner of this race, it is difficult to split JACK RANDALL and Billy Wedge. The latter has solid claims after winning over C&D when last seen, and has plenty of progress left in him in this sphere. He may have to play second-best to the former though who is narrowly preferred on this occasion given his unexposed profile & the fact he is going the right way in handicaps.
  1. Jack Randall
  2. Billy Wedge
  3. Sophia Maria
