Sole handicap newcomer from a yard that have a good record at the track although she'll need to improve on what she's shown so far over shorter trips. Step up to 1m2f will help (long absence to overcome); no easy task off topweight.

Consistent sort who failed to stay when last tried over this trip in much softer conditions at this venue. Back to form last time over 1m and worth another try at this distance on quicker ground; previous form suggests he's nicely weighted.

Matched some of his 2yo form last time showing the benefit of a reappearance run when fourth over 7f at this venue (second run after wind surgery). Dropped a further 2lb to a career-low mark he's not written off if he handles this longer trip.

Yet to prove himself over this far having only been tried at up to 1m (best effort over 7f). Three handicap starts for this yard have however produced only a very modest level of form; not one that is easy to warm to.

Still a maiden after 12 starts and proving to be very much more miss than hit with her latest two starts of the former variety despite a reducing mark. Yet to be tried over as far as this and makes limited appeal despite her experience.

Failed to beat a rival in his four-race 2yo career at up to 7f; hinted that there might be a little more to come in his 3yo career at Hamilton (1m, good) last time. Returning after 11 months off (not seen to best effect), finished with running left.

Winter Snowdrop28

Her previous handicap form had looked humble to say the least although she did make some marked progress last time at Epsom in a better grade. Eased in class here, she has to back that run up, not totally ruled out.

Forecasts

Dame Freya Stark (9/4), Catch My Breath (9/4), Reddiac (4/1), Canasta (9/2), Winter Snowdrop (5/1), Carlow Boy (14/1), Lynchpin (14/1), Margaret J (25/1), Global Goddess (28/1)

Verdict

Some of these will struggle to win handicaps off their current marks but CANASTA still looks to have some progress left in her especially with this increased test of stamina looking to suit after finishing a very sound third on the AW last time. Catch My Breath hasn’t quite proved his stamina for this distance yet but his form over shorter suggests he will stay given a sound underfoot surface. Reddiac and Carlow Boy both have some positives in their profile and can be expected to do better while Dame Freya Stark from the all-conquering Johnston yard can’t be left out of the picture despite topweight and a long absence.
  1. Canasta
  2. Catch My Breath
  3. Reddiac
