Below form on AW debut last time, but had previously run very well when second in a 1m handicap at Sandown behind History Writer. Gelded since last seen, and market should guide.

Best effort this year when winning over 1m at Newcastle in June. Below form after a tardy start when third over C&D last time, 7¾L behind Escobar, but better than that run would suggest, and not ruled out on balance.

Improved for wind surgery and/or gelding, winning handicaps at Hamilton and Ayr in May. Back to form when fourth of 11 to Club Wexford at latter course last time, and place claims if rain stays away.

Dual C&D scorer who was below his best at Ayr last time out when behind Universal Gleam. Perhaps a return to this track can spark a revival and isn't ruled out by any means.

Largely in very good form so far this year, winning at Carlisle earlier in the campaign and running creditably on other starts. Best work late at Pontefract last time, and place claims with a repeat.

Made an encouraging debut for this yard at Ripon, but hasn't built on it in two subsequent starts, albeit not disgraced in a blanket finish at Chester last time. Still early days with him, but others have stronger claims on recent evidence.

Honest sort whose three victories have come off marks in the 77-79 range, most recently at Newmarket last August. Returns from an 8-month break here, though, and entitled to need the run.

Ran well when beaten 3½L into fifth to Irv in a C&D handicap on his penultimate start, and better than the bare result when fourth at Ayr last time, losing two places close home. Chances are not enhanced by being 2lb out of the weights, however.

Showed marked improvement when landing a C&D handicap last month, with International Man back in fifth, and although a 6lb rise demand more, he needs respect as an improving 3-y-o against more exposed rivals.

Forecasts

Irv (10/3), Baltic Baron (7/2), Just Hiss (5/1), Alexander James (6/1), Universal Gleam (13/2), Crownthorpe (9/1), International Man (9/1), Garden Oasis (10/1), Mustarrid (12/1), Tadaawol (16/1), Destroyer (20/1)

Verdict

ALEXANDER JAMES beat Chance, a dual handicap winner since, on his debut, and while he's not improved on that, the drop to 6f was against him last time, and he is much the least exposed runner here. Irv is another progressive 3-y-o, and is shortlisted after winning a C&D event on his latest start, and Mustarrid is also considered with the return to 1m sure to suit given how he's been staying on over shorter recently.
