Winner over 2m and 2m2½f this season struggled twice at pattern level before seventh in ultra-competitive Northumberland Plate latest. Tough, reliable stayer doesn't appear quite well handicapped enough but yard often win with similar sorts.
Landed huge gambles in winning 2017 Cesarewitch (2m2f) and 2018 Northumberland Plate (2m); the latter in his first run of the season. 8lb higher here but every chance this been the plan again and makes plenty of appeal.
Up 5lb here having won the 2m4f Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot latest showing that stamina is very much his trump card. Should be well capable of another bold bid and his five from 14 career record is very impressive.
Third here over 2m2f first time out followed by second in 2m2f Chester Cup before battling success in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle latest. 3lb rise for that not harsh so every chance he's in the mix yet again.
Came from dead last in first start over this trip to finish third behind Who Dares Wins in the Northumberland Plate last time and 2lb better off for that 1L defeat gives him every chance to turn the tables; respected.
Winner over 2m twice this season with 5L score at Haydock two starts back particularly pleasing. Marathon 2m5½f Queen Alexandra fourth latest not without credit but handicapper may have his measure.
Multiple Group 3 winner in South Africa for Mike De Kock but not at his best towards the end of his time there and was never a factor in 50/1 fourth of five on UK in a Sandown Listed race. Best watched.
1m4f soft ground winner here last September but beaten at least 20L in three starts since so has lots of question marks over him now.
Three-time middle distance winner showed aptitude for staying races when second to Carnwennan at Chelmsford last time out over this trip. In deeper today but not totally ruled out.
Last two wins come with cut in the ground and tailed off effort on good to firm latest means supporters will likely be doing a Raindance here. Best form competitive but latest run an obvious worry despite wind-op since.
Three wins and two seconds since going up to 2m and Northumberland consolation at Newcastle latest completed a hat-trick. Gets 7lb extra now but was highly impressive latest and rate of progress means he could easily follow up.
2m2½f heavy ground winner at Chester was doing his best work late on behind Carnwennan latest and there are plenty of pieces of form now suggesting 2m on a flat track and fast ground is not enough of a stamina test.
Two years now since his 2m2f win here and has shown little in 2019 to suggest a return to form being imminent. Risky proposition.
1m6f winner last autumn ran pretty well over that trip at Newmarket latest when third but had been less inspiring before that over 2m and would need a career best to play a part here.
Four-time hurdles scorer won two of her three starts on the Flat back in 2016 when trained in France scoring over 1m6f on heavy most recently. Difficult to quantify here but interesting especially if market support comes.
Both wins on AW and again showed liking for surface when second at Kempton latest in a class 3. This a whole new ball game however and suspect he may struggle.
Forecasts
Proschema (5/1), Carnwennan (5/1), Who Dares Wins (7/1), The Grand Visir (7/1), Withhold (17/2), Coeur de Lion (10/1), Making Miracles (10/1), Rare Groove (12/1), Reshoun (12/1), Billy Ray (14/1), Lucky Deal (25/1), Litterale Ci (33/1), Hermoso Mundo (33/1), Temple Church (33/1), Al Kout (33/1), Jukebox Jive (50/1)
There is no more progressive young staying handicapper than CARNWENNAN right about now and he is worth staying on the right side of in this bid for a four-timer even in a really competitive contest. Having plundered big staying handicaps the last two years lightly-raced Withhold is very much feared especially having won last year's Northumberland Plate first time out. This year's Plate is also well represented with the third that day Proschema taken to turn the tables on Who Dares Wins having been given too much to do at Newcastle.
- Carnwennan
- Withhold
- Proschema
