Easy to back last time having been gelded since his previous run but isn't really progressing in handicaps despite running with credit in that sphere. Off a career-low mark here although he's only dropped 2lb from his initial mark; back up in trip.

One of two in the race for the yard he went close on his seasonal/stable debut over shorter here (didn't get the best of passages); looked the type to win handicaps. Disappointed on the AW last time (run best ignored); chance based on first run.

Yet to run in a handicap having improved with every run; better than she showed last time (weak in the betting) over 1m here in a classified event. Bumped/hampered in the final furlong last time; upped in trip for handicap debut, leading player.

Drops back to 1m2f after not looking suited by further last time (his second handicap start); had looked interesting off 2lb lower on his handicap debut (ran a sound race). Needs to bounce back but yard are in form, this trip should suit perfectly.

Shapes up as the stable second string having looked the sort to do better in handicaps but ran poorly on his first try in this sphere on his comeback (1m, AW). First try at this trip dropped 3lb; hard to draw any hard and fast conclusions.

Best form has come on the Fibresand at Southwell bagging a pair if handicaps there earlier in the year over 7f/1m. Not seen since running respectably in midfield at the same track in April; up in trip, back on turf with blinkers returning.

Forecasts

Lady Mascara (5/2), Kings Royal Hussar (5/2), Maqaadeer (3/1), Smeaton (4/1), Sephton (10/1), Dolly Dupree (20/1)

Verdict

One of the interesting dimensions of this closing handicap is that none of the field have yet won on turf let alone a handicap on the surface. Dolly Dupree is the only winner in the field but it’s hard to give her a chance with her victories having come on Fibresand. Maqaadeer has proved to be consistent rather than progressive while Kings Royal Hussar does need to return to form a reappearance on turf may see to that. Smeaton is interesting on what he showed on his handicap debut (a good second at Hamilton) and he might be the main danger to LADY MASCARA. She was definitely better than her final position (fourth) last time out and off a break and up in trip can break her maiden.
  1. Lady Mascara
  2. Smeaton
  3. Kings Royal Hussar
