Yet to build on a considerate debut on his only run as a three-year-old in two novice runs this year (both over 1m4f). A beaten odds-on favourite last time he now makes his handicap debut stepping up 2f; trainer 0-4 with 4yo handicap newcomers.

Unreliable type over hurdles (refused to race last twice) he did nothing wrong on his return to the Flat last time at Pontefract over 2m1f. That run was below form though (not won on Flat since 2016); remains one to be wary of given his attitude.

Given a chance by the handicapper on turf he duly obliged with a Doncaster win over this trip on quick ground always holding his rivals. Failed in his follow up bid off 4lb higher last time in a better class (0-85); may appreciate this ease in grade.

Not seen out on the Flat yet this year (placed in two low grade hurdles) but this ground may prove a little too quick on his return to the level. His last turf win came on heavy ground off a 4lb lower mark; looks harshly handicapped for now.

Bounced back to form direct from a wind op with a sound effort at Chepstow over 1m4f but failed to repeat that level of performance last time at Haydock. Gets another crack off the same mark again over a longer trip (0-4 at 1m6f plus).

Based on her two placed efforts this year over 1m4f she looks one for handicaps especially over staying trips. Looked more professional at Chepstow last time making the running; trainer has a very modest 4% strike rate with 4yo handicap debutants.

Shown his best form over marathon trips at Pontefract especially for this yard; this trip could well be on the short side for him. No surprise to see the blinkers return after a rather recalcitrant display last time; others make more appeal.

Maiden on the Flat (0-15), has won over hurdles, yard good at exploiting this type. Both his Flat runs this year have proved sound enough (not seen to best effect last time); reasonably well handicapped still; one to take note of in this sphere.

Already notched up two wins this year (one over C&D); appearing to act in all conditions. Unfortunate not to complete a hat-trick last time at Doncaster (poorly placed in a slowly run contest), leading contender if she gets a sound pace to aim at.

Looks to have plenty to prove having missed all of the 2018 season returning this year but suffering seven defeats in a row. Handicapper continues to release the handbrake but she shows little sign of taking advantage despite the yards good form.

Run in just about every sphere of racing (including point-to-points); last in winning form on the AW in December over 2m. Looked rather ring rusty on his recent return (step back in the right direction); others still appeal more though.

Finally opened his account at the 27th attempt last time out at Lingfield (1m6f) off a 4lb lower mark (given a good tactical ride by today's pilot). Up in grade now he had plenty go his way last time; previous record doesn't make a follow up likely.

Forecasts

Motaraabet (7/2), Swordbill (9/2), Maid In Manhattan (5/1), Goscote (6/1), Fields Of Fortune (6/1), Banta Bay (10/1), Valkenburg (12/1), Wind Place And Sho (12/1), Bazooka (16/1), Betancourt (20/1), Miss Ranger (20/1), The Detainee (28/1)

Verdict

The two four-year old handicaps debutants Motaraabet and Goscote are of obvious interest given their unexposed nature and likely improvement in this sphere but neither come from yards with stellar record with first-time handicappers of this nature. Fields Of Fortune although yet to win on the Flat looks well treated and a cleaner run through the race will see him in a better light this time. Swordbill was perhaps too highly tried when trying to follow up his Doncaster victory last time and a slight ease in grade will suit. MAID IN MANHATTAN is thriving for the Rebecca Menzies yard though and granted a robust gallop to aim at the winning thread could be picked up by this likeable mare.
