SW And AT Darby Memorial Handicap

Class 6  |   7f 14y  |   Standard  |   14 Runners  |   Fibresand

Weighed In

Off time: 14:07  |   Winning time: 1m 29.84s

Age: 6|  Weight: 9-7  |  J: N Mackay |  T: I Furtado|  OR: 54|  CD

Her last two wins have come here the latest over C&D where she appeared suited by returning to this trip for a performance not far off her best (had Joyful Dream/Major Crispies behind). Up 6lb for that win but has coped with higher marks in the past.

Age: 7|  Weight: 9-6  |  J: D C Costello |  T: T Coyle|  OR: 53|  D

Newcomer to this surface; comes here on a long losing run with her latest form a rather mixed bag of the indifferent and relatively sound. Ran poorly when last seen and down in grade (run in much better handicaps) does need to find some spark though.

Age: 5|  Weight: 9-5  |  J: Connor Murtagh |  T: Olly Williams|  OR: 52|  CD

C&D winner off a 7lb higher mark who overall has a decent record here although that win is starting to fade into the mists of time (January 2018). Ran respectably last time he was seen here; headgear (blinkers) is retained, chance on best form.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-4  |  J: P Hanagan |  T: J Ewart|  OR: 51|  DWS

Finally found enough progress to score in basement handicap over this trip on Tapeta (Newcastle), first-time tongue tie may have proved the catalyst. One sound and one below-par run since; had wind surgery, now makes his Fibresand debut.

Age: 5|  Weight: 9-3  |  J: Jason Hart |  T: Tristan Davidson|  OR: 50|  D

Looked suited by the drop to 7f on her second start for the yard further enhancing their reputation for improving seemingly exposed sorts. Has to now prove herself on this surface off a 4lb higher mark; won't surprise to see her in the mix.

Age: 8|  Weight: 9-2  |  J: T Eaves |  T: Ronald Thompson|  OR: 49|  D

Unreliable sort who has his quirks but has so far failed to fire for this yard despite having wind surgery. Difficult ride who ran poorly last time (doesn't give the rider much help); 0-4 on Fibresand and opposable despite the falling mark.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-0  |  J: Barry McHugh |  T: J Mackie|  OR: 47

Thirsk turf winner over 6f for his previous yard last year but showed nothing on his first start for this stable here over 5f. Outpaced on that occasion and may be suited by this second try at 7f; on balance though only has minor claims.

Age: 5|  Weight: 8-13  |  J: L P Keniry |  T: J Butler|  OR: 46

Ran well enough behind Fly True here on her first run for the stable but despite another gaining another placing at Kempton last time she remains a maiden (0-37). Seen in various headgear (cheekpieces currently); minor money at best again.

Age: 12|  Weight: 8-13  |  J: Josh Quinn |  T: M W Easterby|  OR: 46|  C|  D

Veteran who is a 6f course winner; took a big step in the right direction last time when finishing late and fast back from a break to take third over 1f less (form decent for the grade). Step back to 7f should suit; last win came two years ago.

Age: 11|  Weight: 8-12  |  J: Philip Prince |  T: R C Guest|  OR: 45|  CD

At home on this surface (three-time course winner) although he's not the most consistent and comes here having been defeated in his last 13 starts. 2lb below his last winning mark but hard to know which version of him is going to turn up.

Age: 7|  Weight: 8-12  |  J: Lewis Edmunds |  T: Rebecca Bastiman|  OR: 45|  D

Well held on three previous visits to the Fibresand and overall 0-21 on synthetic surfaces. That record doesn't bode well despite running a creditable race last time (didn't get a clear run) at Kempton over 1m; others present a stronger case.

Age: 4|  Weight: 8-12  |  J: Phil Dennis |  T: Mrs S A Watt|  OR: 45

Made her Fibresand/AW debut after seven months off over 1m last time in a 0-50 handicap failing to impress and producing just a modest effort. Looks fairly limited on what she's shown so far and hard to recommend.

Age: 6|  Weight: 8-12  |  J: Rossa Ryan |  T: Alexandra Dunn|  OR: 45|  D

Four previous starts on this surface all came when she was with a stable that are very proficient on this surface (placed once over 1m). Has never tried this trip on Fibresand and continues out of sorts for this yard; fails to present a solid case.

Age: 11|  Weight: 8-12  |  J: B A Curtis |  T: S A Harris|  OR: 45|  D

Tried here nine previous times without success (placed five times) and shown very little in three starts returning from 19 months off that would have you rushing to support him. Finished last on previous two starts; can only be watched.

La Cumparsita (11/4), Fly True (7/2), Essential (5/1), I Am Dandy (7/1), Space War (10/1), Tellovoi (11/1), Joyful Dream (14/1), Maureb (20/1), Shakiah (25/1), Major Crispies (28/1), Another Situation (28/1), Be Bold (33/1), Ramblow (33/1), Major Muscari (100/1)

An uninspiring start to the card with plenty of these offering profiles that are far from consistent and it may well be best to rely on previous C&D winner FLY TRUE to follow up her last time out win as she should be able to cope with the 6lb rise. La Cumparsita will be experiencing this unique surface for the first time but if she copes with it then she has every chance of following up her Chelmsford win where she showed a good attitude in the finish. Space War will have caught plenty of attention last time and a repeat of his fast-finishing effort over 6f here will see him go close. Joyful Dream continues to knock on the door but remains a pocket draining experience for her backers.
  1. Fly True
  2. La Cumparsita
